Bats have a bit of an image problem. Halloween probably isn't helping. 🦇🎃
But while we're hanging plastic bats from our ceilings, millions of the real things are arriving in Zambia for one of Africa's most extraordinary wildlife events.
And they're rather more impressive than their spooky reputation suggests.
🌳 They're helping to grow forests. Straw-coloured fruit bats feed on fruit, nectar and pollen, dispersing seeds across enormous distances. They're essential to the regeneration of African forests, including commercially valuable hardwood species.
🦇 They're surprisingly big. With wingspans reaching 95cm, these are some seriously substantial bats. Yet they can travel 20–40km in a single night just searching for fruit.
🌍 They're long-distance travellers. Researchers tracking individual bats recorded one travelling 2,518km over 149 days, from Zambia towards the Democratic Republic of Congo.
🦅 They attract some formidable predators. The enormous gathering draws birds of prey, including martial eagles and African fish eagles, which take advantage of the nightly spectacle.

The migration takes place between October and December, with numbers typically peaking in November. Visitors can watch from elevated forest viewing platforms as the bats pour into the evening sky, or return to their roosts at dawn.
So perhaps this Halloween, spare a thought for the creatures doing some of Africa's most important ecological work.
