One of the easiest wins? Get the 3-day transport pass. It covers unlimited metro, trams and buses, but don’t rely on transport for everything. Budapest is surprisingly walkable, so mixing both saves time and money.

Another mistake? Leaving Parliament tickets until the last minute. Book through the official website before you travel or you could end up paying more—or missing out completely.

And if you’ve seen the famous thermal baths all over social media, here’s the reality: the most popular ones are usually the busiest. Rudas and Lukács are often cheaper, quieter and feel much more local.

First time visiting? Stay on the Pest side. You’ll be closer to most attractions, restaurants and nightlife, with accommodation from around £24 per night.

One more thing: Hungary uses Hungarian forints, not euros. Paying by card is usually the easiest way to avoid unnecessary ATM fees.

First mistake? Paying for the Santa Justa Lift.

You’ll queue for ages… just to get the same view you can access through Convento do Carmo for free 👀

Here’s how to do Lisbon properly in 3 days without overspending ✈️

Day 1:
Start at Praça do Comércio and walk up Rua Augusta.
The arch viewpoint is only €3.50 and honestly worth it for the photos.

Skip the tourist restaurants and grab a bifana at O Trevo from €2.70 🌯

For sunset, São Jorge Castle is the one.
Entry is around €15, but the views over Lisbon are unreal.

Day 2:
Don’t make the mistake of going to Belém on a Monday.
Jerónimos Monastery is closed 😅

Budapest is one of the best value city breaks in Europe… but only if you avoid the tourist traps.

First mistake? Not getting the 3-day transport pass.
It’s around €14 and covers unlimited metro, trams and buses. But honestly, Budapest is way more walkable than people expect, so the best combo is walking + public transport.

Another expensive mistake: buying Parliament tickets from random resellers.
Always use the official website. Tickets sell out fast and third-party sites charge way more for the exact same entry.

And about the thermal baths…
Yes, Széchenyi looks great on Instagram, but it’s usually packed.
Rudas Baths and Lukács Baths feel far more local, less chaotic, and usually cheaper too.

If it’s your first time here, stay on the Pest side.
That’s where most restaurants, bars and transport links are. You can still visit Buda easily during the day without paying premium hotel prices.
