Supercars racing fighter jets on a desert airstrip. That's the kind of sequence Secret Compass was brought in to help plan for The Grand Tour.

One of the sequences involved three supercars racing three fighter jets in a relay, plus helicopters and drones, all within a tight window set by air traffic control.

We were involved from initial scouts through to all shoots, working the risk behind moments that are built to look out of control.

Everyone's asking what the new Grand Tour hosts will be like. We already know.

For the first time in this show's history, one team held the risk picture across the whole production. Fifteen months. Three countries. Every scout, every recce, every shoot. That team was us.

Here's what surprised us: a genuinely fresh start turned out to be easier than inheriting years of established habits. New hosts, new production company, nothing to work around, no "that's not how we've always done it." Just an awesome team up for collaborating on something genuinely epic from day one.

This is the first in a series on what it actually took to make it happen. More to come.

Because when something goes wrong in a remote environment, everything changes.

An evacuation might take hours, not minutes.

The kit you forgot might be impossible to replace.

After the North Pole, Botswana might sound straightforward.

It isn't.

Big game territory has its own risk profile. The wildlife is not a backdrop, it's a variable. One that doesn't follow a schedule and doesn't respond to a risk assessment written in an office.

Every territory on Pole to Pole looked different. The approach to each was the same: understand the environment before you arrive, put the right people in place, and plan for what you can't predict.
