London's river at this point is lined with royal palaces and the homes of courtiers.
Marble Hill was designed by architect Roger Morris in the 1720s for Henrietta Howard. She seems to have paid for it with what I will politely call a pension from the king after he transferred his attentions from her to another woman, and there she established an intellectual circle of friends including Alexander Pope, Horace Walpole and Jonathan Swift.
The house and grounds have recently been the subject of in-depth research and archaeological investigation, followed by on-going restoration.

6 Jane Austen fans & I decided that this was too grand or ducal for Mr Darcy to have lived in, despite speculation about which house the author had in mind as a model for Pemberley.
But Chatsworth does have two first editions of Pride & Prejudice in its library. And is a wonderful house to visit.

The beautiful 'robe a lys', created by the House of Worth for La Comtesse Greffulhe, and shown worn in 1896 in a photograph by Paul Nadar.
On a very hot day in Paris, the fabulously cool Petit Palais was a wonderful place to visit, not only for the extensive Charles Worth exhibition, but also for its permanent collection, to which entry was free.
Lunch under the cool trees of the Tuileries Garden, followed by a return to the air-conditioned Petit Palais the explore further.
A perfect day.
