The Okavango Delta is enjoying one of its most expansive inundations in years. Water that fell months ago on Angola’s distant plateau has finally reached Botswana, arriving in unusual volume and colliding with an already rain-soaked landscape. The result is a Delta stretched to near-capacity: floodplains submerged, channels broadened, and dry tracks replaced by waterways.

As the water advances, wildlife adapts. Animals retreat to islands and elevated ground, creating concentrated pockets of activity where elephants, antelope and predators interact in close quarters. For visitors, the Delta has become a vast, gleaming wetland offering exceptional boating, striking scenery and unusually dynamic game-viewing conditions.

While everyone knows Zanzibar, Mafia Island - further south - has long been the connoisseur’s choice for laid-back, feet-in-the-sand island chilling.

There are no crowds , just a scattering of high-quality, low-key lodges - treehouses tucked into green canopy and private villas facing the Indian Ocean.

From June onwards, Mafia slips into its best season. Skies clear, humidity drops, and visibility underwater goes almost unreal.

Zambia’s Wildlife Art Exhibition is now open and runs until 7th August.

Hosted at the Zambia National Art Gallery, in Livingstone, the exhibition has become an eagerly-anticipated fixture in the country’s cultural calendar. Now in its fourth year, it brings together 83 works by Zambian and Zambia-based artists - the largest edition yet.

It’s a relaxed, accessible stop just off Sichango Road (turn left at the giraffes), open daily 09:00–17:00 with free entry. Many works are also available for purchase.

Duke’s Camp in Botswana’s Okavango Delta is a stylish, intimate safari camp set on a private concession with outstanding wildlife viewing.

A standout conservation highlight is the award-winning Elephant Express initiative, which helps safely transport schoolchildren through elephant corridors to reduce human–wildlife conflict, directly supporting local communities and conservation efforts in the region.

In little over a week, with your own 4WD and driver-guide for the duration, you can encounter extraordinarily different landscapes across Tanzania’s Great Rift Valley.

The region’s three top national parks: Tarangire, alive with elephant herds and sliced by its namesake river; Ngorongoro, its spectacular crater patrolled by prides of lion and clans of hyena; and the Serengeti, its endless plains home to staggering numbers of wildebeest, zebra and impala - forever observed by predators.

Set north-east of the Great Rift Valley and below Mount Kenya, Laikipia has become one of Kenya’s strongest safari regions, rivaling the Maasai Mara for overall experience.

Roughly the size of Wales or New Hampshire, Laikipia offers space on a rare scale, so it never feels crowded.

Accommodation is widely dispersed across private conservancies and ranches, often hours apart. Lodges are typically small, stylish tented camps or eco-lodges built with local materials and a light environmental footprint. At Expert Africa we’ve explored the region to select the best of them.

Zambia has long been regarded as the world’s walking safari capital – and for good reason. Photographic walking safaris in Africa were pioneered here, and it remains one of the very best countries on the continent to explore the bush on foot.

Walking with an expert guide is one of the best ways to truly connect with the African bush. You notice so much more on foot. Most camps in Zambia offer walking safaris, but Expert Africa has been researching and exploring the Luangwa Valley since 1995, giving us decades of first-hand knowledge of the camps, the areas and – critically – the guides.

South Luangwa is hard to beat, and remains a firm favourite for many travellers, but for something even more remote - reach further to North Luangwa, with its tiny, seasonal bushcamps and specialist guides exploring a truly untouched wilderness.

Saruni Samburu commands a rocky hilltop in Kenya’s Kalama Conservancy, its villas threaded through boulders and facing a vast sweep of dry riverbeds and rust-coloured hills. The setting is defined by its height: raptors pass at eye level, and the night sky feels unusually close.

Game drives span the Kalama conservancy and Samburu National Reserve, opening access to varied habitats and a strong cast of northern species, plus elephants, predators and plains game. The chance to do walking safaris and spend time with your Samburu hosts further ground the experience in the landscape and pastoral life.

Heavy rains across the Okavango and Zambezi catchments mean this year’s flood is on its way – and Botswana is looking superb.

Rising water levels are transforming parts of the Okavango into the watery wilderness it’s famous for. Some areas are now beautifully inundated, while others remain dry, concentrating wildlife and creating excellent game viewing. Increased water levels are also allowing more camps to offer classic Delta activities like boating and mokoro trips.

With our team recently in Botswana and colleagues there now, we’re working with very up-to-date local knowledge. It’s shaping up to be a fantastic year to experience the Okavango at its most dynamic.
