A family who have just returned from a LiNGER trip to Japan ventured to Nagano in the Japanese Alps. While they also visited Tokyo and Kyoto, this lesser known destination became the highlight of their trip.

It can feel like a step into the unknown to try somewhere unfamiliar. However, with the right guidance, you can be sure it's a step in the right direction.

We're thrilled to be top of Wanderlust's list of the 25 Most Exciting Trips in Latin America.

This adventure takes you through five completely different landscapes: the urban rhythm of Rio; the remote rivers and villages of the Amazon; the canyons and waterfalls of Chapada dos Veadeiros; the wildlife of the Cerrado savannah; and the undulating dunes and lagoons of Lençois Maranhenses.

For excitement, that's hard to top.

People often ask me where, as a trip planner, where I myself go on holiday.

The latest destination was well under the radar:

Maramures, deep in the Romanian countryside.

Traditions are so strong here that the area is a field trip destination for students of cultural anthropology. Villagers work the land, sustain themselves with the fruits of their labour, and support each other.

The community spirit extends to visitors:

A farmer we waved to invited us onto his cart. A lady picking apples invited us to milk her sheep the next day. The neighbourhood priest noticed us peering through the gate and handed us the key to the 400-year old church.

The warm welcome was aided by being the only Brits ever to have stayed in this village, and the only visitors ever to have engaged with many of these activities. WE were the novelty here:

"Your sons have never milked a cow?!"
"But how do you get your butter?"
"You don't drink liquor at breakfast?!"

This is immersive travel at its most genuine, and an experience that will stay with my children and me forever.

In this deprived fishing village in Colombia, there was no safe place for the children to play.
With help from our partners, .ltda , we were able to refurbish the local playground.
In a place where adult responsibilities come too early, there's now somewhere that children can just be children.

NASA astronauts train here - it's the closest place on earth to the surface of Mars.
I had my extraterrestrial experience with my feet firmly on the ground. Slot canyons, steaming geysers and an eternity of constellations, in the Chile's Atacama Desert.

Places change over time. That's why I go on 'fam trips' regularly - to keep my local knowledge up to date.

Back in Chile's Atacama Desert recently, I discovered a new part of Moon Valley most don't see; Rainbow Mountains of striking formations from verdigris green to russet red; and a transporting sound bath experience under the setting desert sun.

Personally knowing the destinations I recommend is fundamental to how I operate. And keeping that knowledge up to date is key.

It’s always satisfying to end with a 'surprise and delight' moment.

For this South American trip, that meant one final dinner. No restaurant. No signpost. Just a hidden stretch of desert, a beautifully laid table, and the sort of silence you only find far from the road.

We like to keep something in reserve. A closing note that feels considered, personal and unexpected.

Judging by this traveller’s words, it did the trick.
