Why removing mould properly is crucial before installing a new kitchen
Very often homeowners only see the surface problem — mould on the wall.
Many people think that painting over it or cleaning it will solve the issue.
Unfortunately, that only hides the problem for a short time.
In reality, mould grows deep inside the plaster and wall structure.
If it is not removed properly, it will always come back.
That is why in this project we removed all contaminated plaster completely — all the way back to the brick.
Only after removing the damaged layers we could properly prepare the walls for a new kitchen installation.
This process included:
• removing old plaster affected by mould
• cleaning and drying the wall structure
• installing new plumbing for the kitchen
• preparing electrical connections for appliances
• applying proper cement render to protect against moisture
• creating a strong and level surface ready for kitchen units

⚠️ Unexpected problems during renovations — why they happen and how to prepare for them

One of the most common questions clients ask is:
“Why do unexpected costs sometimes appear during a renovation?”

The truth is that many issues in construction are simply impossible to see before the work begins.

Walls, floors and structures often hide things that only become visible once the old materials are removed.

For example, during kitchen renovations or extensions we sometimes discover:

• damaged or rotten timber
• old or unsafe electrical wiring
• plumbing that needs replacing
• hidden moisture or mould
• structural elements that were not installed correctly in the past

These problems were usually already there, but hidden behind tiles, plaster or cabinets.

That’s why professional builders always explain that renovation work can sometimes reveal unexpected issues.

It’s not about doing something wrong — it’s about uncovering what was previously hidden.

How to reduce stress and avoid surprises

There are a few simple ways homeowners can prepare for this:

🔲 Why can one builder tile 5 m² in a day… and another 20 m²?

At first glance it may look like one of them is simply faster or more experienced.

But in reality, the difference is often how the tiles are installed.

Unfortunately, many installers try to save time by fixing tiles using the so-called “dot and dab” method (glue applied in blobs or patches on the tile).

It is quicker.
It uses less adhesive.
And yes… it allows someone to tile three or four times faster.

But there is a serious problem with this method.

When tiles are installed on blobs of adhesive, large empty spaces remain behind the tile.

Those voids can cause serious issues later:

❌ tiles can crack under pressure
❌ tiles can become loose over time
❌ water can collect behind the tile
❌ moisture and mould can develop inside the wall

In wet areas like bathrooms this can become a major long-term problem.

That’s why professional tiling should be done differently.

The correct method is to apply adhesive using a notched trowel, creating full and even coverage.

But even more importantly:

✔️ adhesive should be applied to the wall
✔️ adhesive should also be applied to the tile itself (back-buttering)

This ensures that when the tile is pressed into place, the adhesive spreads evenly and removes all air gaps behind the tile.

The result?

A tile installation that is:

✔️ stronger
✔️ more stable
✔️ fully supported
✔️ resistant to moisture problems

Yes — this method takes more time.

But just like with waterproofing, the goal is not to finish the job as fast as possible.

The goal is to do it properly so it lasts for years.
