Happy new year Maldives fans! And to kick off 2026, we have an extra-special offer to one of our very favourite islands, 5-star Hideaway Beach. It's a large island but with only 54 beach villas and 57 overwater villas, so there is lots of space between villas.

As its name suggests, Hideaway is in a wonderfully remote-feeling location, 75 minutes by seaplane from the airport (or you can choose a domestic flight instead), and has one of the liveliest and most-easily accessible house reefs we've seen, just a few metres from shore in places. Some pictures from our recent visit to Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, Maldives, sister island to Dhawa Ihuru – both around 25 minutes from the airport by speedboat, and just a few minutes away from each other on the free boat that shuttles back and forth every two hours.

Banyan Tree is the more luxurious option, a little larger than Dhawa Ihuru with all 48 villas having private pools in the rear garden and a sala with sun loungers in front. The Ocean View Pool Villas are set slightly further back from the sea to the Beachfront Pool Villas but otherwise they are very similar; some find the Ocean View villas more private while others may prefer the more open views from the Beachfront. There are four Grand Beachfront Pool Villas which have a separate living room that can take extra beds and a second bathroom, so these villas are great for families as they can accommodate up to 5 adults – the two rooms are not interconnected though so not ideal for very young children.

A house reef goes all around the island but is further away from the shore in most places than at Dhawa Ihuru – guests are welcome to go over to Ihuru so you have two reefs to explore.

There are three restaurants – the Thai-influenced Saffron and the Sangu Garden, with tables set on the beach, have some buffet and some a la carte nights, while the newest addition is the stunning overwater Madi Hiyaa, Japanese-themed and built to resemble a manta ray. Here you’ll also find a two-tier overwater swimming pool and a bar, there are water hammocks to lounge on as well as more traditional seating – easier to get out of!

All meal plans are dine-around and you can stay on any basis from B&B to All Inclusive, minibar is included in the AI. The main bar, the Naiboli, is on the beach and has some low-key evening entertainment such as live music or traditional Bodu Beru dancing.

There is also a small gym, a spa and a Marine Centre with resident marine biologists who give regular talks, showing how they grow new corals on small discs called cookies, which they later transplant onto ‘electric reefs’ - coral frames with a low-voltage electric current that makes the corals grow 10 times faster than they would naturally. A really interesting place to visit.

Natural materials are a real feature of Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, and the island paths are very atmospheric at night, lit by bamboo lanterns. There is definitely a luxury feel here, while still having a relaxed, barefoot vibe – highly recommended!

Some pictures from our recent stay at Dhawa Ihuru, just 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport but far enough away to have gorgeous views and that desert island feeling. And you get to explore two islands and house reefs here as its sister island, the more luxury Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, is just a 5-minute hop in the boat that shuttles back and forth every couple of hours. Dhawa Ihuru is more entry-level 5-star.

The island is small – it takes just 10 minutes to walk around – but perfectly formed, circular with a reef all around, and what a reef! There are 5 clearly-marked channels to reach the drop-off easily, with healthy-looking corals, plenty of the usual sealife including lots of large parrotfish, ‘nemos’ and reef sharks. There is also a shipwreck for divers to explore. Beaches do have groynes but we didn’t find them obtrusive and the sand is mostly powder-soft.

There is no pool (although you are welcome to use the pool over at Banyan Tree) but there is a well-equipped gym, yoga, free non-motorised watersports, spa, table tennis and a small kids club.

All 45 villas are detached bungalows and the same except for the bathrooms – all semi-outdoors but some have a whirlpool bath and some, like the villa we stayed in, are Rainmist Villas. We couldn’t really understand these before and... still don’t! There is a net to lie on while a network of overhead jets spray out fine mists of water – supposedly rejuvenating but felt like drizzly rain to us!

The rooms are modern and spacious enough to sleep 4, all have TV, tea and coffee facilities and a good minibar including beer, wine and full-size bottles of spirits, replenished daily. Everyone is on All Inclusive, and there is also a Premium All Inclusive that gives you premium brand drinks, in-villa dining once a day and the ability to use the main restaurant and bar on Banyan Tree. You can pay to eat at the Banyan Tree restaurants if on ordinary AI.

We really liked the outdoor space in front of the villas, with an open view to the sea but still feeling private, with table and chairs, comfy daybed, traditional Maldivian swing and sun loungers.

There is just the one restaurant on Dhawa Ihuru, overlooking the beach with buffets at lunch and alternating between buffets and set menu for dinner – not a huge choice but all tasty and well-presented. Breakfasts had a good egg station, waffles and juices freshly made from your selection of fruit. Proper pots of tea and coffee so no waiting for refills! There is also a nicely chilled-out bar.

We were very impressed with Dhawa Ihuru, everything a Maldivian island should be!
