PUSH by Shoshana As a Doula, I support women and couples through pregnancy and birth. I aim to be a calming voice and presence to create a positive birth experience. Nonsense!

What is a Doula? A Doula is a person that supports women and couples through pregnancy and birth. At a time when midwives are often stretched running between various women giving birth, a Doula is a calming constant presence from beginning to end. She becomes the labouring woman's advocate and voice, and protects her from all surrounding noise and chaos at a time when she needs to focus most in a

place of quiet and calm. A Doula also helps women believe that their bodies were designed for this task and they should therefore embrace birth rather than fear it. The more they relax into it, the more naturally the body will open up. What's critical is to help women/couples achieve the birth they want. Too many women still have the preconceived idea that if they don't have the perfect textbook natural birth, they have already failed as women and mothers. Our role is to support the mum's choice and help her to achieve a positive birthing experience so she looks back with pride and not horror! If it's an epidural she wants, that is her absolute prerogative to do so. A Doula is NOT a medical professional. I work in partnership with midwives and doctors and respect their medical knowledge and professionalism. A Doula is unable to perform examinations or any other clinical task. I help communicate with the medical staff to ensure my clients have all the information they need to make informed decisions throughout their labour.

artist - I came across this fabulous photo yesterday of Linda McCartney taken on August 28th 1969 just after having given birth to Mary McCartney. It sums up brilliantly the overwhelming mix of emotion every woman feels having just given birth - shock, joy, euphoria, exhaustion, wonder, fear and awe! The most humbling yet powerful experience that women can go through! #1969

Sanders - “Follow the Bubbles” - this delightful colourful painting highlights the wonder of the amniotic sac and fluid - the watery substance that babies develop and grow in. I’ve always been fascinated by it. It surrounds and protects a developing fetus inside the amniotic sac during pregnancy - and acts as a cushion, protecting the baby from injury, and maintaining a stable temperature. It also allows the baby to move freely, which is important for musculoskeletal development. This incredible fluid also acts as a reservoir of nutrients and plays a role in the development of the baby’s lungs and digestive system. It’s ‘breaking’ once a woman goes into labour can either be a very dramatic gush or very subtle trickle! Either way, it highlights yet another one of the miraculous aspects of pregnancy and birth 🤍

Unknown artist - saw this in person last week at the fabulous Nassau County Museum of Art in NY. They have a fantastic sculpture garden that includes 40 sculptures - an absolute favourite art medium of mine - from 30 international artists including Botero and Bertoldi. This caught my eye of a mother holding her child up like a trophy - created as an identical ‘Mini’ version of herself. It struck me how children are often associated as being “a chip off the old block” or “carbon copies of their parents” - expected to be the same. Of course nature and nurture show us that sometimes this is very much the case - and sometimes very much not! In character or form - they have their parents DNA and genetic make up - but kids are often a mini version of themselves. Stand alone personalities that parents are often left wondering how they created and gave birth to someone so different to themselves. The wonder of parenting 🤍

Belaubre - “L’Arbre en Gesine - The Tree Giving Birth” - I absolutely love trees! And what they represent. The idea of something so natural, solid and eternal that changes and replicates with each season. Every tree has an evolutionary rebirth with its leaves, branches and frame that is often seen, but also hidden. The idea that this continuation of life being created in its trunk is soulful and hopeful, wondrous and healing. It’s interesting how Belaubre has chosen the colour red - intrinsic of blood, birth and life - and sometimes also death. How nature, alongside life and death, is so intertwined with the continual cycle of life

Hepworth - “Child with Mother” - a friend of mine currently in France sent me this image of one of Hepworth’s beautiful sculptures that are so representative of her modern unique and characteristic style. Her sculptures are often full of holes that she described as “connections” - connections between “different expressions of form” that gave validity to the materials she used. Iconic in every way

Baldeva - “Mother and Child” - When you know - you know - those rare quiet moments when it’s just the two of you sitting quietly in the middle of the night or day - being together - breastfeeding, holding or calming - peaceful, soul bursting, exhausting, and intrinsically connected. The soft paint colours and light are so beautifully depicting these myriad of emotions # joy

Adamopoulou - “I was about to explode” - In this striking painting, a pregnant woman stands against a backdrop of vibrant red, her form defined by bold strokes of blue for her dress and body. The absence of facial features lends an air of abstraction, inviting viewers to reflect on their own pregnancy experiences. With a sense of quiet anticipation, the woman stands poised, embodying the universal essence of waiting and the transformative journey of motherhood

Khatami - “Head vs Heart” - the artist has created a whole series of works with text and symbolism. She chooses the quotes that inspire and impact her and then redefines them by deciding what image reflects it. Choosing to have a baby (those who have the biological privilege to do so) can be an emotional rather than practical decision. Questions such as “is it the right time” - “can we afford another baby” - “is my body capable of doing this” or “am I getting too old to consider this” are just some of these conundrums

-Christopher Murat - “I lost my Baby” - According to Tommy’s and Sands - two British charities helping women and couples deal with the heartbreak and devastation of baby loss - 250,000 pregnancies end every year in miscarriage - and 2,680 in stillbirths. These are huge numbers. Baby loss is often still ‘unexplained’ and can be excruciatingly painful. Having had a miscarriage myself - and sadly knowing women who have experienced stillbirths - it’s devastating and soul destroying. We are not in control of much - particularly when it comes to pregnancy and birth - and that feeling of having something “taken away” for reasons we often don’t know is numbing and excruciating. ’s

Joffe - “Blast Off” - two friends chatting before literally one of their lives is about to embark on something so new and extraordinary! The waiting and expectancy before one gives birth can be so intense - the wondering of the how’s, when’s and why’s. The excitement and unknowingness - figuring out what life may look and feel like, what to call the baby, how it will impact on your life and your relationship if you’re in one. This pivotal time is unique and special 🤍

@ Letizia Maria Cavallo - “Maternity Painting” I love the delicacy of this painting - the way both the toddler and baby are clinging on to their mum - for their physical and emotional needs - and how she is tenderly loving them. That juggle is so intense and exhausting - to make your kids feel loved and nurtured - whilst also remembering to take care of yourself. The relationship and dynamic is intense and powerful - and intrinsically linked however challenging.
