✨️ WALK ALERT! ✨️

Leading this little excursion into the dark side of the City this Friday morning. 🌒

Tickets here ---> https://www.cityoflondonguides.com/tours/dark-side-of-the-city

If you want to know who got murdered where and why, the grim details of how the City dealt with its growing population of departed at different times in history, where executions took place, and even what sinister rhyme was recited to the ones about to be lead to the scaffold, this one is for you! 🗡🏰

There's something particularly delicious about wearing Discworld merch while on a pilgrimage to the City of London to visit the sights of Worshipful Company Halls. The more times I read Terry Pratchett's unquestionably brilliant series, the more I realise how much of the City of London there is in it. ! 🛡🍻

This particular jewel is Cutlers' Hall. A stone throw's away from St Paul's Cathedral, this characterful building is a hidden country manor in the heart of the City. A Victorian building, it hosts one of the oldest medieval guilds of the City of London, the Cutlers, craftsmen and manufacturers of swords, knives, and anything with a blade. The intricate frieze sculpted by. Benjamin Creswick depicts the four stages of a cutler's work and features some beautifully human details, such as an elder master teaching a young apprentice the trade. ⚔️🗡

Not quite the Assassins' Guild, perhaps, but pretty sharp, if you ask me... ⚔️✨️🏰✨️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🗡🇬🇧

⚔️✨️🏰✨️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🗡🇬🇧

Guess what! To welcome Beer Garden season, London Guided Walks are introducing a Covent Garden Food and Drink tour, ending at, you guessed it, the Guiness Brewery in Covent Garden! I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak as part of their training course, and they even let us pour a pint at the end! A half pint in my case, as it was a school night.

I'll post dates on here once it gets going, but meanwhile, make sure you visit https://londonguidedwalks.co.uk/ for more guided walk dates, and use the code MARIA10 for a small discount on any booking!

See you around! 🏰🍻

As we enter the New Year, let us think of renewal, summer, and warmth, and what better thing to conjure up all of this than this gem of a painting which you can see in the Guildhall Art Gallery, the best place in the City to escape the world?

This deluge of beauty is called "La Ghirlandata", and it was painted in 1873 by English painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti. I have to mention that some of my colleagues are not as enamoured with it as I am, perhaps perhaps due to the fact that we all had to wade through pages and pages of information and prepare and deliver strictly-timed presentations on this and several other works, or perhaps due to the fact that Rossetti's somewhat Medievalist aesthetics can seem a bit overly-sweetened to some, but for me, it remains without a doubt one of the most beautiful paintings I have ever laid eyes on.

Painted by a lovesick Rossetti, who expressed excitement at its being "the greenest painting in the world", but also at his work fetching a fairly lush price from its commissioner, it is considered by some to be imbued with symbols alluding to the painter's doomed love affair with his friend's wife, amongst which the pelican on the harp (pelicans were considered a symbol of self-sacrifice) and the attempt at depicting a delightfully beautiful, but deadly poisonous plant in the blue flowers at the bottom of the image.
