Highlights from MS Midnatsol’s last voyage to Svalbard this season 🚢

180 years since Richard With was born in Tromsø!

Richard With is best known as the founder, captain and driving force behind the first Hurtigruten voyage in 1893. A few years earlier, he had founded Vesteraalens Steamship Company in Stokmarknes, one of the companies that over the years became Hurtigruten.

Captain With was at the helm when the first Hurtigruten ship revolutionised coastal transport by sailing both day and night, dramatically cutting travel times between the north and south. He would later serve in the Norwegian Parliament and played an important role in the establishment of the Norwegian America Line, the development of Norway’s mail and freight services, and as a pioneer in the travel industry.

You probably know this famous lighthouse in Norway... 🇳🇴

Perched on a tiny skerry off Ørlandet, a deep red, octagonal lighthouse shines across a busy shipping lane at Bjungfjord. This distinctive seamark is the Kjeungskjær lighthouse, built in 1880. The 20-metre high structure helps fishermen and sea travellers stay on course as they approach the point where the Trondheimsfjord meets the North Sea nearby.

The lighthouse is open for guests to tour, enjoy its magical views and get close to the abundant birdlife. Visitors who wish to stay longer can even rent the lighthouse keeper's apartment, which has enough room for several people.

Hurtigruten passes Kjeungskjær lighthouse on its way between the ports of Trondheim and Rørvik.
