Sunday at Carshalton ponds…

Again we face a dry upper pond!

On a plus - 2 signets are on the Wandle.

🚨 IT’S HAPPENED AGAIN! 🚨 Just months after repairs were carried out, Carshalton Ponds have reportedly ‘drained overnight’ and Sutton Council is now investigating.

Sutton Council has confirmed that its team is looking into what caused the sudden drop in water levels, saying it is “monitoring the site closely” to help protect the wildlife affected by the ongoing issues.

It comes just three months after the council drained the upper pond to carry out repairs to a leak near Honeywood Museum and The Greyhound. Even more concerning, warnings were issued just two months ago that water levels could drop “quite significantly”.

SES Water had previously been topping up the ponds while work was carried out to address leaks. However, over the summer, the council said this was no longer possible due to increased drought restrictions.

With the ponds facing further problems so soon after repairs, questions are once again being raised about what is going wrong and what can be done to prevent this from happening again.

💬 What do you make of the continuing issues at Carshalton Ponds? Are you concerned about the impact on local wildlife, and do you think more needs to be done to find a lasting solution? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

It’s a Saturday in the 2000s it’s your old mum’s birthday… where else would you have taken her…

I’ve been raiding the old HD again - this time I’ve found loads of Fanny’s Farm images from 2008 - these may - hopefully nudge some fond memories!

Apologies for the photography - they’re probably taken on an old 1 megapixel camera 📸

Another post about Grove House - today the barriers came down and some people were invited in for a tour of the newly renovated manor house.

What I noticed was that even though the apartments have been modernised, they have kept some historic features such as fireplaces, staircases and even the Carshalton Coat of Arms!

Brochures of the apartments are now available and it’s definitely worth a look.

What do you think of the renovation, do you think buildings like this get saved from standing derelict for years then torn down by them being turned into residential properties, I’d be interested in your thoughts!

Grove House is nearing completion, and as I walked past this week I saw they have installed bug houses, bat boxes, bird boxes and what’s the one in the tree?! Nice to see nature is being encouraged.

I thought that, with a few weeks having passed since the modern footbridge directly over the cascade was replaced, it would be a good time to share some photographs from when the waterfall was rebuilt in 1968.

The waterfall, also known as the cascade or Mill Weir, dates back to the 1800s. The weir provided the head of water needed to power the mill. The 1.5-metre waterfall was rebuilt using sandstone blocks in 1968, when the ponds and canal were also lined with concrete to prevent them from drying out.

The original photographs are captioned “The Opening of the New Waterfall c.1965”, although council records give the year as 1968. Whichever date is correct, I find it fascinating to compare old and new photographs taken from exactly the same locations. In this case, there’s a gap of around 58 years between the two sets of images!

It’s a wonderful way to see how the landscape has changed over the decades, while some of its familiar features remain.

Who remembers The Art Shop on the High Street where Dottys Teahouse now is?

I remember going in there with my mum and being told in a whisper every minute or so - “don’t touch anything, if it breaks we have to pay for it”…. “Leave that alone”… “don’t even look at that it will break”…

It was a place to buy art materials, local art, get stuff framed, another independent sadly missed. Luckily it was replaced by an independent business.

Who remembers when the grass children’s playground in The Grove were grass tennis courts?

It wasn’t long ago in the shadow of Grove House, right where the zip-wire area of the playground were 3 grass tennis courts, the configuration and amount changed over the years.

The photo of the courts is from 1965 and run along the footpath baseline to baseline, that’s what I remember from the 1990s, but I’ve seen an aerial photo from 1940s having the courts round the other way!

I’ve attached a previous graphic of the lost tennis courts of The Grove, does anyone have memories of these tennis courts?

Did you know that before the grass tennis courts, that location was the original home of Carshalton Bowling Club?

Does anyone know what this is growing in the flower beds in Carshalton High Street?

It’s been suggested that it could be ‘Turkey tail’ - a very common, non-toxic polypore bracket fungus found on decaying hardwood logs and stumps worldwide. It earns its name from its fan-like shape and beautifully zoned rings of contrasting colours, which mimic a wild turkey’s tail feathers.

But if anyone knows for sure it would be great to know!

It’s a Sunday what are you doing this evening… ROLL back 30 years and I would have been getting ready for…

The Sunday Roller Disco at Westcroft Leisure Centre in Carshalton was an absolute staple of local youth life in the 1990s.

I used to go with my first girlfriend. Although, at 11-13 years old, having a girlfriend basically meant holding hands, it felt like a big deal. It probably finished around 9pm, but back then that felt incredibly late, exciting and grown-up. From memory there might have been two discos, one earlier for younger kids?!

The main sports hall would be transformed into a proper roller disco. The partition would be removed, a stage and DJ set up, and there’d be disco lights and dry ice filling the hall. I even remember thinking the stewards looked really cool, with their neon hi-vis vests hanging out of their trousers!

Two tracks that really stick in my memory from that era are Cotton Eye Joe by Rednex and No Good (Start the Dance) by The Prodigy. They couldn’t have been more different, but both instantly take me back. What other standout tracks would have been on the playlist?

It’s a shame there doesn’t seem to be a regular event like that locally anymore. I remember roller-skates and rollerblades being everywhere back then. Maybe skating was simply more popular in the 1990s, or perhaps it’s just harder to attract the crowds these days.

Does anyone else remember the Sunday Roller Disco at Westcroft Leisure Centre in the 1990s? I’d love to hear your memories, especially if you remember the music, the atmosphere, or just spending your Sunday evenings skating around with your mates or were you one of the cool stewards? 🛼

The main image used in this photo isn’t from Westcroft, the two images in circles are of Westcroft back in the 1990’s.
