Jurassic Coast 🐚.

Have you ever visited the UK Jurassic Coast?

“The Jurassic Coast begins in Exmouth, Devon, and continues for 95 miles to Old Harry Rocks, near Swanage, Dorset. It is England’s only natural World Heritage Site, and was inscribed by UNESCO in 2001 for the outstanding universal value of its rocks, fossils and landforms.”

The first time I came across the Jurassic Coast I was reading a £1 book I bought in Liverpool almost 10 years ago.

The book is called “The most amazing places on Britain’s Coast” by Reader’s Digest and it’s been a true source of inspiration when planning short trips throughout the years.

A couple of years later, we organised a camping trip to Lyme Regis, and, excited as I was, I spent the whole weekend looking for fossils on the beach. As soon as I found one, I kept walking on the beach looking for more. I think we spent hours and hours fossil hunting in Lyme Regis Fossil Beach. One of the best memories I have of a UK trip.

The Dorset area around Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove is also part of the Jurassic Coast. If you like walking, spend a few hours wandering around the Bat’s Head, Durdle Door, St. Oswald’s Bay, Lulworth Cove and Mupe Bay beach.

West Lulworth.

If you’re visiting the Dorset Jurassic Coast from Durdle Door to Lulworth Cove, make sure you visit West Lulworth, a coastal village with the cutest  thatched houses and flower decorations.

Dorset is perhaps most famous for its thatched cottages. They line pretty country lanes and feature heavily in Dorset’s villages. Thatching cottages, goes back hundreds of years and you will find cottages in Dorset that are over 300 years old.

Thatching is the craft of building a roof with dry vegetation such as straw, water reed, sedge, rushes, heather, or palm branches, layering the vegetation so as to shed water away from the inner roof.

🌊 Lulworth Cove.

For a few seconds, as soon we got to Lulworth Cove, we thought not to be in England anymore but somewhere in Southern Europe. It reminded us of a crystal clear cove we visited in Croatia years ago. The only difference, which actually brought us back to reality, was the weather.

“Formed by the combined forces of the sea and a river swollen by melting ice at the end of the last Ice Age. Lulworth Cove is world-famous for its unique geology and landforms including the Lulworth Crumple and Stair Hole.  Open every day, thousands of people each year come to enjoy the panoramic views and crystal clear waters on this stretch of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. From rock-pooling and watersports, to walking, coasteering or just relaxing with an ice cream, this is a must-visit destination on the Dorset Coast.” https://lulworth.com/visit/places-to-visit/lulworth-cove/

Amazing landscape.

The landscape is simply breathtaking! Durdle Door and the surroundings are stunning!

We spent a couple of hours on the beach where we had lunch. Being that popular, Durdle Door tends to get a bit busy during the weekend, if you fancy a quieter place, just head to Man O'War Beach, which is basically around the corner.

Be careful of the steps!

You’ll need to walk quite a few steps in order to reach both Durdle Door and Man O’War beaches and it may be challenging. There’s also a “Social Distancing not always possible on beach steps” warning sign.

Dorset Jurassic Coast.

At the moment, in order to meet the social distancing requirements, we had to follow a one-way route to reach Durdle Door. It’s actually a very nice 20 minutes walk which took us to the Bat’s Head, another scenic point we also wanted to see.

The white cliffs that surround Durdle Door are just so pretty that we could spend the day just taking photos of every single corner of them.

While heading to Durdle Door, please follow the instructions and don’t be naughty like many of the people around us who ignored the one-way route, not respecting the social distancing measures.

Durdle Door.

Durdle Door has been in our list of places to see in the UK for ages.

A few years ago, we spent a long weekend in Bournemouth, which is quite close to it, but didn’t manage to organise a day trip and visit. Well, this time was the time!

While camping in New Forest we decided to take a day trip and explore the Dorset Jurassic Coast.

The site has plenty of scenic points which are all worth a visit. If you’re interested in seeing most of them, it’s good to plan your time carefully and define an itinerary for the day. We decided to head directly to Durdle Door and start our tour from there. The area is fully equipped with a car park and public toilets; food and drinks are also available.

Plan your visit. 10 highlights and tips.

In case you would like to camp in the New Forest, here are some highlights and tips from our adventure that you might find helpful.

1 - 📅 Make sure you book a campsite before you travel. With the social distancing measurements, most of the campsites don’t have much availability and won’t have available spare pitches.

2 - 🏕️ Campsites usually operate a 3 nights minimum stay policy.

3 - 🏞️ Be surrounded by nature and wake up with the neighing of horses. It is amazing!

4 - 🐎🐴 Don’t be scared of animals in the wild. They’re used to having people around and won’t hurt you. During one of our walks, 3 horses approached us. They just wanted to be rubbed in the face.

5 - 🥩 If you plan to have a bbq and eat meat, check Hockey's Farm Shop, We bought the best rib-eye steaks ever.

6 - 🌲Visit Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary and get lost in the depths of the forest

7 - 🚙 Drive slow and be mindful of animals in the wild.

8 - 📷 Take a photo of a mama donkey and her baby.

9 - 🌌 Wait until it’s dark and look up. With very little light pollution the stars are amazing.

10 - 😷 Don’t forget to wear a mask in indoor public places and remember to maintain social distancing avoiding overcrowded places.

Enjoy your trip!

🌊 Seaside.

If you are a sea lover like we are, make sure you allow some time to visit Lymington and Lepe. We actually fell in love with Lepe. It’s been so nice to spend a few hours walking on the sandy beach, listening to the sound of the waves. The weather was amazing as it was sunny and hot; I think it would be the perfect location where to recharge and sunbathe for a half day.

The sea is also relatively calm. The Isle of Wight acts as a shield and kind of protects the area from the Atlantic Ocean strength.

In case you’re interested, there are a couple of campsites in the Lepe area that might be worth checking.

New Forest walks and animals in the wild.

Let’s talk a bit about why you should visit the New Forest National Park.

“From beautiful scenery to free roaming animals, fascinating history to scenic coastline, there's something for everyone in the New Forest National Park.”

If you’re exploring New Forest by car, you’ll be able to see plenty of walks and hiking trails signs everywhere.

Our campsite was in front of Ashley Walk, a not difficult at all and enjoyable walk that will allow you to connect with nature and animals inhabiting the land. We spent a couple of hours exploring the area encountering numerous horses, donkeys, cows and rabbits.

Bolton’s Bench near Lyndhurst, the walks around Burley are also worth a visit, while the breathtaking Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary and the surrounding forest are definitely a must-see.

Last but not least! While driving in the New Forest be aware of the animals in the wild. They love to walk on the road. There were loads of baby donkeys and their mothers enjoying a stroll, sometimes taking a nap in the middle of the road. One of the cutest things we’ve ever seen.

Benefits of travelling after a pandemic.

We really wanted to find a secluded campsite immersed in the beautiful New Forest landscape. A lot of campsites are still shut and won’t reopen until April 2021. After doing a bit of research we found Tom’s field in the New Forest, the perfect campsite that still had available pitches and matched all of our requirements: 💻 online booking available, ⛺ tents welcomed, equipped with 🚽 toilet and 🚿 shower facilities, 🍢 bbq friendly, quiet and with free drinkable 🥤 water.

Our post-pandemic travel experience has been full of positives. We’ve been of course super careful and tried to wear our face mask every time we accessed an indoor space, but overall, we’re really pleased with the outcome of this first mini holiday.

Social distancing allows fewer people to be around avoiding overcrowding conditions. In the campsite, we had a huge pitch for ourselves where we could fit a 3 people tent, a car and still had a lot of space for blankets, bbq and other stuff.

Another thing that made me so happy has been the cleanliness of every toilet facility we used during our holiday. To comply with the new post-COVID regulations, the campsite provided not only the existing male and female WCs, but they also allocated portable toilets throughout the campsite and a shower block. Everything cleaned on a regular basis. On top of that, all the public toilets we used in pubs, cafes, car parks, service stations were super cleaned and didn’t smell bad. A dream come true! I hope it will never change.

Moreover, we felt a general sense of gratefulness in every place we visited, which has been very nice.

🏕️ Camping in the New Forest.

Last week, we finally went on our first trip since the beginning of the lockdown. Back in March, when all our hopes of going back home over Easter vanished, we came up with the idea of going camping somewhere in England. That, of course never happened; the pandemic spread all over the UK, everything shut and we’ve been in lockdown until a few weeks ago.

In the past few weeks, we’ve been so happy to discover most campsites have reopened, allowing visitors to stay overnight and use toilet/shower facilities.

Hooray! ⛺ Camping it is!

Before even deciding where to go, we rented a car 🚙 to secure we could actually go somewhere.

We prefer to rent cars at airports terminal as they usually have better prices, so we did this time. Being based in London, we choose to get the car from City Airport, as it’s not far from where we live.

At first, we thought of finding a remote campsite in the Seven Sisters area; then, the idea of camping in New Forest came to our mind.

Plan your visit.

In case you would like to visit the lavender fields, here are some tips and recommendations that might be helpful.

1 - 💜 July has not ended yet. There’s still plenty of time to see the lavender fields in full bloom.

2 - 📷 If possible, visit the lavender fields in the morning rather than the afternoon. You’ll get better photos of the fields overlooking the farm.

3 - 📅 Book in advance. This year, in order to maintain social distancing measures and the comfort of visitors and team, access to the Castle Farm Lavender Fields will be by pre-booked ticket only.

4 - 🚙 Visit the Hop Shop. They’re offering a drive-thru service at the moment. We bought a couple of lavender plants and the lavender honey.

5 - 🌤️ Check the weather forecast before booking your spot hoping it won’t change at the very last minute.

6 - 🐝 Be careful of bees and bumblebees.

7 - 👕 Don’t wear yellow or flower pattern clothes (Insects are attracted to them)

8 - 🚽 There are no available toilet facilities at the farm at the moment. (Don’t drink too much water)

9 - 🏞️ Allow some extra time to explore the beautiful countryside and villages nearby

10 - 🛣️ Access the farm from the right entrance (via A225). We drove through the wrong one and had to go back.
