The answer to yesterday's quiz is C: Wales! 🏴

A few years ago, my mom and I traveled to the island of Anglesey in North Wales to see where the Myrick part of our family came from. (if you look closely, you can see us waving from the castle!) We went looking for our roots and found so much more: breathtaking scenery, warm and welcoming people, and a corner of the world where Welsh is still the everyday language you hear in shops and on the street. A wonderful local driver took us around Snowdon, and every turn in the road came with another story. (and perhaps a sheep and a bit of awe at the tiny lane-like dimensions of the road!)
My favorite memory? Arriving at a station where we’d assumed we could just hop in a taxi, and being surprised to learn that simply was not how it worked (in 2015). The only cab in sight was there because someone else had called ahead for him. The driver saw us standing there, asked if we had a ride, and when we said no, he told us to wait. He dropped off his passengers and came right back for us. Even with the best-laid plans, it’s those unscripted moments of kindness that become the stories you tell for years. He also heard my mom on the phone and declared "I could listen to you talk all day; it's like having Dolly Parton in the car!" (the accent of course, but who doesn't like to be compared to Dolly??) He was an amazing character.
A few reasons Wales deserves a spot on your list:
🏰 Castles everywhere. North Wales alone has Caernarfon, Conwy, Harlech, and Beaumaris, all part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
🗣️ A living language. Welsh is one of Europe’s oldest living languages, and it’s on every road sign.
⛰️ Eryri (Snowdonia). Hike Yr Wyddfa, or Snowdon, or ride the mountain railway to the top.
🌊 A coast you can walk. The Wales Coast Path follows the entire coastline.
⛴️ Easy to pair with Ireland. Ferries run between Holyhead on Anglesey and Dublin.
Wales has a way of surprising you. My mom and I went looking for a bit of family history, and we came home with a whole collection of new stories. I can’t wait to go back and explore the southern coast, and I hope one day Wales surprises you too.
