Rethymno beach, Crete, Greece

Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands (and it’s the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea). I’ve been to Greece quite a lot over the years although, so far, I’ve only been to Crete once. There’s definitely a lot more for me to explore around this island.

Rethymno Old Town, Crete, Greece

The Old Town of Rethymno sits between Chania and Heraklion on the north coast of Crete. It’s a mixture of mosques and renaissance buildings thanks to the Ottomans and Venetians. The Venetian harbour is lovely to walk around and if you’re feeling more energetic you can visit Fortezza, a star-shaped 16th century citadel situated on a hilltop overlooking the city. It’s also a great place to wander around and explore all the little, cobbled streets.

Rethymno beach, Crete, Greece

Tuesday Travels!

From the Greek mainland last week, to the (almost most southerly) Greek island of Crete this week. I spent a lovely, relaxing week on the beach at Rethymno in Crete a few years ago when I had time off before starting a new job. It’s on the north coast of the island and the long, sandy beach extends for several miles to the east of the city.

Greek salad, Peloponnese, Greece

Foodie Friday!

Perhaps a bit obvious however when in Greece you absolutely have to enjoy a delicious Greek salad (or two or three!) They’re always so much nicer and full of flavour compared to what I try to recreate back at home.

Tolo, Peloponnese, Greece

This lovely, sandy beach was very low key and quiet when I spent time here almost 30 years ago. It was a small fishing village and not really on the tourist trail. I was travelling with friends who lived in Athens for part of the year, so they had that all-important local knowledge.

View from Nafplio, Peloponnese, Greece

Often considered one of the most romantic cities in Greece, Nafplio is brimming with history. It was the first capital of the newly born Greek state between 1823 and 1834. I explored the Fortress of Palamidi and Acronauplia (the oldest part of the city) and you get fantastic views across the city as well as the beautiful scenery of this part of the Peloponnese.

Agii Theodori, Peloponnese, Greece

Tuesday Travels!

Continuing my travels around Greece, this week I’m in the Peloponnese which is part of the Greek mainland. This is the beach at Agii Theodori. I stayed here with friends who lived in Athens for several months of the year (they lived in London for the remaining part of the year which is where I met them). I visited almost 30 years ago, and at that time it was a quiet, relaxed place with a pebble beach and crystal-clear water.
