Giant’s Causeway Visitor Information Centre, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, UK

There are lots of interesting and informative displays about the Giant’s Causeway at the Visitor Information Centre. It’s definitely worth spending some time in here before or after walking along the coastline. The building itself has been designed so that it blends into the landscape and takes inspiration from the local area with the grey of the basalt and the shapes of the columns.

Coastline at the Giant’s Causeway, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, UK

These are some of the lovely views of the coastline during the walk from the Visitor Centre ‘down’ to the Giant’s Causeway. On the day I was there it was very windswept and a bit wild (and then it poured with rain!) even though it was July. It’s also very lush and green, mostly due to all the rain.

Giant’s Causeway, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, UK

I loved seeing all the basalt columns close up. There are approximately 40,000 of these stone pillars along about 4 miles (6 km) of the northern coast of Northern Ireland. They were formed some 60 million years ago as the result of a volcanic eruption. The columns are mostly hexagonal although some have four, five, seven or eight sides.

Tuesday Travels!

After my holiday to Iceland, I then ventured just a short hop across to Northern Ireland to visit a good friend. For this trip we travelled up to the north coast to the Giant’s Causeway as I had never been before. We joined a guided walking tour and learnt lots about the history, geography and geology of the area. It’s a famous natural landmark and the only UNESCO world heritage site in Northern Ireland. By coincidence it shares a lot of similarities to parts of Iceland.

Some of you will have noticed lots of photos from Iceland over the last few weeks. Here's a summary of my time visiting the land of ice and fire. It's a fantastic, varied country with the most spectacular scenery.

If this inspires you to book a trip, please get in touch so I can take care of all the research, planning and booking of your holiday to Iceland.

Dettifoss waterfall, Diamond Circle Tour, Iceland

The last stop on my Diamond Circle Tour from Akureyri was to Dettifoss. Located in Vatnajökull National Park, it’s reputed to be either the most powerful waterfall in Europe (or the second most after the Rhine Falls in Switzerland). It’s estimated that 200 cubic meters of water per second plunge over the edge. You get a different perspective from the other waterfalls I visited in Iceland because you view Dettifoss from ‘above’. There are a network of walking trails so you can see a variety of views.

Viti Crater, Diamond Circle Tour, Iceland

Viti Crater was formed during a massive volcanic eruption and is close to Lake Myvatn in northern Iceland. It’s part of the Krafla volcanic system and is one of the most active geothermal / volcanic parts of the country. It’s about 300 metres in diameter and there’s a path all the way around which affords great views. The lake really is a gorgeous vivid aqua blue colour – no photoshop needed.

Hverir geothermal area, Diamond Circle Tour, Iceland

This is one of the main (if not THE main) attractions of the Lake Myvatn area in North Iceland. Part of the Krafla volcanic system, the smell is horrible, but once you get used to that, you can enjoy the very unusual landscape. Features include colourful sulphurous mud springs, steam vents, cracked mud and fumaroles and it definitely feels like you’re exploring another planet - I loved it!

Godafoss waterfall, Diamond Circle Tour, Iceland

Tuesday Travels!

When in Iceland and it’s another week and another waterfall! Similar to the Golden Circle Tour from Reykjavik, the Diamond Circle Tour is from Akureyri in the north. It’s a great way to see lots of spectacular sights in one day. The first stop was Godafoss, about 45 minutes from Akureyri. It’s one of the most impressive waterfalls in Iceland – 12 metres high and over 30 metres wide. I especially loved the curve of the falls.
