Santiago de la Ribera, Costa Calida, Murcia, Spain

This is the beach-front promenade at Santiago de le Ribera, just along the coast from Los Alcazares where my family live. This old fishing village has 4 km of beach with fine golden sand and is on the Mar Menor. It’s quieter than Los Alcazares and it’s lovely to walk along by the sea and stop off for a drink or some tapas.

Market, Incursiones Berberiscas, Los Alcazares, Murcia,

One of the most popular events in the region of Murcia, Incursiones Berberiscas includes a large medieval market which takes over lots of streets in Los Alcazares near the Town Hall and around the old town. There are loads of little stalls selling handicrafts, gifts, food & drink. It’s great to mooch around and peruse the stalls. There’s also various street entertainers moving throughout the market adding to the atmosphere.

Grand Parade, Incursiones Berberiscas, Los Alcazares, Murcia, Spain

The streets along the route of the Grand Parade were packed with people watching – it’s one of the most popular events in Murcia. As well as the floats and groups in costumes, there were two big ‘characters’ in the parade – a giant and, right at the end, a dragon. Without giving too much away there were surprises in store with both of these. It was very impressive and they were both real crowd-pleasers.

Grand Parade, Incursiones Berberiscas, Los Alcazares, Murcia, Spain

Tuesday Travels!

While the rest of Murcia region, along with the majority of Spain, enjoys its Semana Santa (Holy Week) processions there are four days of revelry with a difference in Los Alcazares. This year was the 25th anniversary of the Los Alcazares Berber Raids (Incursiones Berberiscas). It was the first time I have been there on a Saturday to watch the Grand Parade. Starting at 21.00 the parade celebrates the town’s 16th century history and includes thousands of ‘festeros’ (participants) in dazzling Moorish and Christian attire march through the Avenida Libertad in one of the most highly anticipated spectacles of the week.

Foodie Friday!

I was lucky with the weather at Easter when I was visiting my family as it was warm and sunny. It’s never a hardship to have an ice cream when abroad. We all enjoyed an Italian gelato from Gelateria Del Bianco in Cartagena – very yummy.

Ayuntamiento de Murcia, Murcia City, Murcia, Spain

Ayuntamiento de Murcia (the Town Hall of Murcia), is a fabulous (pink) 19th century building built in the neoclassical style in Plaza de la Glorieta, facing the Segura river.
The City Hall annex was designed by architect Rafael Moneo and is quite a contrast in architecture with its contemporary style. This is in Plaza Cardinal Belluga directly opposite the Cathedral.

Plaza de la Glorieta, Murcia City, Murcia, Spain

Just a few minutes’ walk from the Cathedral, on the banks of the Segura river, is this gorgeous square - Plaza de la Glorieta. It has several fountains and amazing flower beds. The flowers were looking particularly impressive in early Spring because of Jardines de Primavera.

Jardines de Primavera, Murcia City, Murcia, Spain

Tuesday Travels!

I’m in Murcia (city), the capital of the region with the same name. It’s a beautiful city and feels very authentic and Spanish and is much less crowded than a lot of other cities in Spain. When I was there a few weeks ago it was the ‘Jardines de Primavera’ (Spring Gardens) which is a spectacular, city-wide floral exhibition held every year to start the famous ‘Fiestas de Primavera’ (Spring Festival).
