The Guild of Cornish Celebrants

The Guild of Cornish Celebrants Our aim is to offer up to date advice and guidance to all couples and professionals in the wedding industry.

Established in 2014 after almost 20 years in the Registration Service, The Guild is run by Nicola and Denise. They have unparalleled experience and expertise in helping to ensure that couples understand all that they need to do to complete the legal marriage process, and how they can then celebrate with a bespoke ceremony. In addition they offer advice and guidance to Wedding Venues and other prof

essionals to enable them to understand the processes and differences between different types of ceremonies - both statutory and non legal. Their knowledge base covers Civil, Religious and Church of England marriage and civil partnership ceremonies. They are committed to keeping their legal knowledge up-to-date, and support the Give Couples Choice Movement, and are keeping abreast of the implications of the Law Commissioners report on the future of marriage which is due to be published in July 2022. They are highly regarded as experts in their field in Cornwall and beyond. Please contact them if you would like to discuss training or advice. The Guilds sister page is updated regularly with details of ceremonies and wedding events.

The relaxation in the law allowing legal ceremonies to take place outdoors at approved venues has been made permanent. But remember this does not mean couples will have a more personalised ceremony.

Non-religious ceremonies in England and Wales were first allowed outside during the pandemic.

It is very disappointing that our humanist colleagues remain committed to their 'pressing need for legal recognition of humanist marriages' .

This is despite the judgement in the High Court court case (Harrison) last summer advocating waiting until the Law Commission report, and a similar response to a Westminster Hall Debate at the end of January (full text of the debate via the link below)
https://hansard.parliament.uk/commons/2022-01-27/debates/7ED63DE2-1703-4E86-8540-71506ADB44D7/HumanistMarriages

I have no issue at all with humanists being accorded the right to legally officiate weddings, but I am disappointed that they simply won't recognise and acknowledge that this should be the right of ALL celebrants.

The Law Commission Report is now due to be published in July, and so highly unlikely to be considered in Parliament until after the summer recess. It is incredibly frustrating that the Law Commission report is so delayed, but to give all couples REAL choice, we must move forward together, humanist and independent alike.

There is so much more that unites us than divides us. That is evident if you read the Hansard report, where humanist celebrants describe why their ceremonies are special. It is exactly what independent celebrants do too.

To this end, I have written again today to my constituency MP Nadine Dorries, asking for her support for ALL celebrant wedding ceremonies to have legal recognition.
