I was up on the Saddleworth moors on Sunday, for the remembrance service held at 'Pots and Pans' there's a memorial to the villages of Saddleworth to honour those who died in the First World War and afterwards I went for a walk on the moors.

I saw someone ahead of me on the path, a dark figure moving slowly through the haze. I picked up my pace, thinking I’d catch up, but no matter how fast I walked, they never seemed to get any closer.

Maybe it was just my mind playing tricks, the moors do that to you. There’s something about this landscape that feels ancient and restless, like souls still wander here, searching for something they’ll never quite find.

By the time I reached the Indian’s Head, they were gone. Not a sound, not a shadow left. Just the silence of the moor and that uneasy feeling that maybe, just maybe, I hadn’t been alone after all.

They say say grief can leave an imprint, not just on people, but on places. Once you know a tragic story, your mind begins to fill silence with footsteps, and shadows with figures.

That’s worth remembering when you hear about an Uppermill postman, I’ll call him Graham.

In 1996, hurrying home for the Euro ’96 kick-off, he passed a terraced house here in Uppermill where he saw an elderly woman staring down at him from the front bedroom window. He smiled and waved. She didn’t move. Didn’t blink. Just watched.

A few days later, the same woman was there again, same window, same stare. But when Graham mentioned it to the homeowner, Jill, she went pale. “That can’t be,” she said quietly. “I live alone.”

What Jill eventually discovered in her attic maybe explains why that window never quite stays dark…

Ten years of walking people around Uppermill and I learnt a lot.

If you mention the word ghost to most people, you’ll likely unlock a story — a chilling experience of their own or one passed down through a friend. Try it: next time you’re at the water cooler, say you’re going on a ghost walk and watch the reaction. Humans love a good ghost story. It’s in our DNA — that irresistible pull toward the unknown, the “you never know.”

Over a decade of leading ghost walks, I’ve heard countless tales from the public — from dogs hiding in wardrobes and unseen cats scratching in charity shops, to a painter pinned against a wall by something he couldn’t see. Some stories you can’t quite hand a story to, as I like to say — but others stay with you.

Like the woman who, as a child, was dragged from the water gasping for breath. Or the teacher who saw the silent spirit of a screaming baby. Or the men who swore they had to swerve their car to avoid a woman standing motionless in the middle of the road. These are the stories that haunt me — tales I research, tracing their roots to real-life traumas that have somehow imprinted themselves on the present.

Now, with VoiceMap, I’m thrilled to announce the release of Spirits of Saddleworth: Uppermill’s Ghost Walk Audio Guide — a fully immersive GPS-guided experience. Slip on your headphones and let the dark history and ghostly legends of this moorland village unfold around you as you walk the same streets where spirits are said to linger.

If you’re ready to explore Saddleworth’s supernatural side, this is your chance to do it — wherever and whenever you dare.

It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since I first led the Uppermill Ghost Walk — a mix of eerie tales and local legends about witchcraft, the occult, and the unexplained. Over the years, people have shared their own strange encounters, and I’ve done my best to dig into the history behind them.

There was the postman who swore he saw a widowed woman in a window… the mysterious “smiling policeman” who pulled a woman from the duck pond… and the teenager obsessed with the occult who claimed to suffer paranormal attacks.

Now, I’ve gathered these stories together in a brand-new audio guide, and I’m looking for a few volunteers to test the walk before Halloween.

It’s a 60-minute, easy stroll through Uppermill — you’ll hear me narrate the tales and guide you along the route.

If you’d like a free code to try it out, just send me a message!

Thanks,
Everyone

Hi everyone! I’m busy in Uppermill, Saddleworth, turning my walking tour of the village into a GPS audio tour. That means you’ll soon be able to download it and hear all the ghostly tales and local history I’ve uncovered — guided step by step at your own pace.

Before I record the final version, I create a test one with an automated voice (a bit like Google Maps). It has all the timings and directions, but I need some willing volunteers to try it out and give me feedback.

👉 Fancy a stroll around Uppermill while testing it? You’ll get the finished walk completely free once it’s recorded — plus my undying gratitude!

The nights are drawing in, and Uppermill changes with the season. The streets grow quieter, the shadows longer, and the old stones seem to hold their breath.
For more than ten years I’ve walked these lanes by lamp light, listening as people shared their own encounters — strange footsteps by the pond, a voice in an empty room, a figure seen once and never again. I went looking for answers, and the truths I found were darker than I imagined.
There’s the policeman who never left his post at the water’s edge. The driver who met Rita on the road and lived to regret it. The boy who sings when no child is there. And the terror that comes in the night, when you cannot move, cannot breathe.
This autumn, with VoiceMap, I’ll share these stories with you as they were told to me, and as I uncovered them in the history of this moorland village.
Come and listen. But be warned — once you hear them, you’ll never walk through Uppermill quite the same way again.
