Herdwicks are the hardy native breed of sheep that are hefted to the Cumbrian fells. They have a distinctive white face and the lambs are born with a black fleece. Legend and research links them to the Norse settlers who arrived in the 10th century. They are well suited to survive winter on the Cumbrian fells. The Herdwick's hefting instinct has helped shape the system of common fell grazing. The lambs learn from their mothers to stay near their heft or area of fell so they don't wander far from home on unenclosed land.

Beautiful morning at Dodd Wood.
We highly recommend a visit. The Old Sawmill tea room is great place to stop off for a refuel after taking in this absolutely stunning view over Bassenthwaite lake 🏞☕️😍👌
