The Caseggiato di Diana (left) as seen from the Via dei Balconi. This is what apartment living looked like during the Antonine period (AD 138–192), with shops and storage areas on the ground floor. The building is thought to have risen four or five storeys high.

This circular room is part of the Baths of the Seven Sages at Ostia Antica. Dating from the Hadrianic period, this room is thought to have served more than one function over its lifetime, including a frigidarium. 12m in diameter, with polychrome mosaics depicting hunting scenes; this is a captivating space. Statues were discovered here in the 19th century and the structure was originally topped by a cupola.

Taking a walk through Herculaneum in March 2026, starting along the Decumanus Inferiore and continuing to the Palaestra. I felt vaguely queasy watching the video back … sorry for the wobblyness.

Looking through the Arch of Augustus towards the west side of the Temple of Jupiter at Pompeii. This paved area not only formed a route from the Forum to the Vicolo dei Soprastanti, but also to the public latrines. Steps leading up to a second, smaller arch can be seen here. This was mostly an open space, although the remains of the Forum’s western porticoes (out of shot on the left) indicate that they ended at the rear wall of this area.

The theatre of Ostia stands on the north side of the ancient Decumanus Maximus. Originally built in the reign of Augustus, it was renewed and expanded in the late second century AD to a capacity of 4000. Summer performances are still a feature here.

Telamons feature here in the tepidarium of the Forum Baths at Pompeii. They frame niches which, aside from their architectural value, were likely used for storing oils and accessories such as strigils … used for scraping oils from the body.

The museum description was brief … “Bust of a goddess, with veil and diadem; marble. 2nd century AD.” Not awfully helpful, but honest at least 🙂 Alas, some prodding of the universal knowledge base produced little more. Nonetheless, it is a striking piece.

This is displayed at the Roman Theatre Museum in Verona, and the photograph was taken in May 2024.
