Are you ready for the change in season?

We are!

Though the grass is still green (after a really dry summer),  the jumpers are out,  the leaves are turning and falling, and the days are getting shorter.  For us, this signals the end of our walking season.

We still have a few walkers on The Ridgeway and the Thames Path but only until the end of this month.

It doesn't mean you cannot reach us from November.  It just means we will be hibernating mostly indoors  😆 in the office catching up on admin,  accounts and handling bookings for next year.

We will have dedicated time outdoors, of course.   We hope you will too.

Look out for our posts and make sure you give us a follow.  We don't want you to miss us.

When the doors closed, we hold our breath and wait!  😳

Here's what we know with certain accommodations so far.

The Well Guesthouse will reopen in April after refurbishments but only from Monday through to Thursday.

Cheney Thatch in Bishopstone had closed because the owner passed away.

Hill barn, Sparsholt is now permanently closed. 

The Perch and Pike in South Stoke has reopened but food and drinks only.

The Fat Fox Inn, Watlington recently closed and new owners have been found.  We'll keep an eye for when they reopen.

The Plough at Cadsden has now been closed for a year and we have no idea if they will reopen.

Quite a grim 😬 update but worth noting so you don't end up with nowhere to stay.

Lunch and water 💧 is sparse on The Ridgeway National Trail from Avebury to Goring & Streatley 😲

so it's best to plan in advance.

You can pre-order your lunch packs at
✅️ Dorwyn Manor, Avebury
✅️ The Well Guesthouse, Ogbourne St. George
✅️ Helen Browning's The Royal Oak, Bishopstone
✅️ The Rose and Crown, Ashbury
✅️ The Crown and Horns, East Ilsley

You also need to be aware that on certain days, you may need to book your dinner in advance. We find that on Sundays, some accommodations only serve dinner until 6pm. And if there's no where nearby to eat and you get caught out, you may need to call for a taxi to take you out or, if you can, order a takeaway. 😊

These matter because you don't want to be hungry and thirsty. And you need nourishment to sustain you the following day.

All these details are included in our packages.

Another one of those that makes your walking holiday worry free. 😊

Where did they come from? 👐

Here's a tally of the countries where our walkers come from. Caution: these numbers represent the number of parties, not number of people.

It's interesting to see how many tourists come from overseas.

We are pleasantly surprised to know that we make a small contribution to British economy.

Now we will give ourselves a pat on the back. 😊 Long may we continue to export British walking holidays! 🙏

Where to stay for the night in Newbury

The Elephant 🐘 at the Market is not to be missed. It is centrally located in the heart of Newbury.
✅️ next to the Newbury Corn Exchange
✅️ near the West Berkshire Museum
✅️ near the Kennet and Avon Canal
✅️ has a stylish bar and restaurant
✅️ and it is a hotel 👍🏼
✅️ situated in Market Place, where one can people watch, shop, eat or just sit and pass the time.

If you happen to be walking the Kennet and Avon Canal path, this is the place to stay.

On the Kennet and Avon Canal,

Side tripping in Newbury 🤩

Newbury may be better known for its racecourse and races but, don't miss walking around town, its Saturday market and the West Berkshire Museum. It's full of information and findings about the town's history and its association with the Kennet and Avon Canal. I didn't know about the kerseys until I stepped inside the museum. I certainly FELT more learned after that. 😊👍🏼 More importantly, there is no entry fee.

Walking towards the cloth hall which houses the museum is The Lock, Stock and Barrel pub. Anyone knows of Guy Ritchie's film, Lock, Stock and Smoking Barrel? Not sure if there's any connection 🤔 😆

And perhaps the well kept Corn Exchange and Post Office buildings are signs of how historical this Berkshire town is.

If someone asks, would you go side tripping in Newbury? It's a Yes for me.
