Richmond Falls: Stunning Yorkshire waterfalls among 13 new bathing sites in the UK

This new exhibition at The Yorkshire Museum features the extraordinary MELSONBY HOARD found just outside Richmond. It's the largest collection of Iron Age metalwork ever discovered in the United Kingdom and includes chariot fittings, harness pieces and evidence of immense wealth and power in Iron Age Britain.

Did you know that there are also other important treasures on display there which have been found locally including:
⚔️ The Gilling Sword - discovered in Gilling West near Richmond in 1976 by a 9-year-old boy playing in Gilling Beck and later famously featured on Blue Peter. Dating from the late 9th to early 10th century, it is considered one of the finest surviving examples of Anglo-Saxon weaponry.
💎 The Middleham Jewel - found near Middleham Castle (the northern home of Richard III) in 1985 by a metal detectorist returning to his car at dusk. This exquisite gold and sapphire pendant, dating from 1450–1500 AD, is regarded as the finest piece of medieval gold-working ever discovered in England.
🏰 The Stanwick Iron Age Fortifications - once the most important Brigantian settlement in northern England around 40 AD. The nearby Stanwick Hoard was discovered in 1845 and included elaborate Iron Age horse harnesses and chariot fittings, now held by the British Museum.

🌉 Piercebridge Roman Fort and Bridge – a significant site located on the River Tees partly in Co Durham and stretching into North Yorkshire. The Roman Bridge remains date to the 3rd century to carry Dere Street across the River; the fort dates to around 260 AD built to protect the crossing and there are remains of a large civilian settlement too.
