Our Highland cattle are very much part of life at The Old Vicarage, and you’ll often spot them grazing in the fields around the house.

They have a pretty special place to call home too, surrounded by the beautiful countryside of Swaledale and the Yorkshire Dales.

Love walking? Love books? Richmond has just the festival for you.

The Richmond Walking and Book Festival returns from 18–27 September, bringing together two great ways to enjoy this beautiful part of Yorkshire.

There’s a varied programme of guided walks through Richmond and the surrounding Dales, with routes for different abilities, alongside author talks and book events.

Several of this year’s walks head into Arkengarthdale, pictured here, giving walkers the chance to explore one of Swaledale’s beautiful neighbouring dales.

And if you fancy making a holiday of it, The Old Vicarage makes a lovely base. We currently have availability for the weeks commencing 18 and 25 September, so you can enjoy the festival and still have plenty of time to relax and explore Swaledale at your own pace.

It’s Sourdough September!

Organised by the The Real Bread Campaign, Sourdough September is a month-long celebration of genuine sourdough – and we know just the place to enjoy some here in Swaledale.

Just a short drive from The Old Vicarage, Two Dales Bakery in Reeth produces some wonderful artisan bread, including its memorable sourdough, baked in its own on-site bakehouse. Delicious!!

It’s also a lovely place to stop for coffee, breakfast or lunch while exploring Reeth and the surrounding area.

It’s just one of the many independent food businesses that make this part of the Yorkshire Dales such a treat for anyone who enjoys good honest food.

Every old house has a story...

One of the great charms of The Old Vicarage is its rich history. Many of the original features have been carefully preserved, each with a story to tell.

Take the old brass bed warming pan hanging in the hallway. Look closely and you'll notice a sizeable dent!

According to a memoir written by former owner Mary Ellerton, the culprit was an inquisitive bull calf that wandered into the house through the back door. As the family tried to usher their unexpected visitor back outside, it collided with the bed warming pan, leaving a dent that's still there today.

Thankfully, our resident Highland cattle are much better behaved (and safely contained!), so today's guests are unlikely to encounter any unexpected four-legged visitors indoors!

It's just one of the many stories that makes The Old Vicarage such a special place.
