Spent a fascinating day in the company of Mr. Takiguchi who took us on a walk in the Forest of Hikari, teaching us about the Ainu people. We watched a local performance, did some woodcarving and explored the local village. UNESCO lists the Ainu language as “critically endangered,” with only a handful of fluent, native speakers remaining.
