For a 3-night stay, I’d choose one of these areas depending on the type of trip.

1. Sultanahmet – for first-time visitors

Hotel: Sura Hagia Sophia Hotel

Stay here if seeing the major sights is the priority. You can walk to Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar.

✨Best for sightseeing
✨Historic atmosphere
✨Minimal taxi use

2. Karaköy – my personal pick

Hotel: The Bank Hotel Istanbul

Karaköy feels more contemporary, with great restaurants, cafés and easy ferry access.

✨Best for food & nightlife
✨Bosphorus access
✨Stylish boutique feel

3. Taksim / Galata – for a city-break vibe

Hotel: Pera Palace Hotel

A beautiful historic hotel close to Galata Tower and Istiklal Street.

✨Best for shopping & cafés
✨Lively atmosphere
✨Easy metro connections

I would personally choose Karaköy. It gives the best balance of sightseeing, restaurants, Bosphorus views and transport links, and it feels less touristy than Sultanahmet while still being very convenient.

Which area would you choose — historic Sultanahmet, stylish Karaköy or lively Galata? 👇

Following on from last week’s post on why Istanbul is such a great stopover choice, here’s exactly how I’d spend 3 nights there.

✨Arrive, check in and head straight for the Bosphorus for those “two continents, one skyline” views from your very first evening.
✨Spend a full day in historic Sultanahmet, taking in Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace, plus the cool, atmospheric Basilica Cistern underneath the streets.
✨Lose yourself in the Grand Bazaar and Spice Market, then ferry across to Kadıköy on the Asian side for cafés, street food and a more local vibe.
✨Reset completely with a traditional hammam experience before your onward flight.

The beauty of using Istanbul as a layover is that it breaks up a long journey, lets you adjust to the time zone, and adds a huge dose of culture, food and scenery without needing extra flights. You arrive at your final destination feeling like you have already had a bonus city‑break.

If you are flying long‑haul soon and like the idea of building in 2–3 nights in Istanbul, I can plan the whole thing for you: the right area to stay, private transfers, key sights and those little touches that make it feel seamless rather than stressful. Just send me a message and I will talk you through the options.

Istanbul is a great stopover city because it gives you a completely different travel experience without adding a huge amount of time to your journey.

Why it works so well as a layover

• Direct flights from London, Manchester and other UK airports

• Major hub for flights to the Maldives, Thailand, Bali, Singapore, Vietnam and many other long-haul destinations

• Only around 4 hours from the UK

• Excellent value for hotels and food compared with many European cities

• Easy airport transfers by taxi or metro

What makes Istanbul special?

It’s the only city in the world that sits on two continents. In one day you can explore grand mosques, wander through historic bazaars, cruise along the Bosphorus and enjoy a rooftop dinner overlooking the skyline.

It’s perfect for…

✨Couples
✨Food lovers
✨Culture seekers

A 2–3 night stopover is ideal — enough time to see the highlights without feeling rushed.

Would you add Istanbul to your next long-haul trip?

People often ask me why they should use a travel consultant when it’s so easy to book online.

The truth is, booking is the easy part.

Choosing the right destination, finding the hotel that’s genuinely right for you, understanding what’s good value, and knowing someone is there if anything goes wrong... that’s where I can make a real difference.

Every holiday I recommend is one I’d be happy to suggest to my own family and friends. If it isn’t right for you, I simply won’t recommend it.

My job isn’t simply to book a holiday.

It’s to make sure you come home saying, “That was exactly what we wanted.”

If you’ve got a trip in mind, even if it’s just an idea at the moment, I’d love to chat.

After sharing how I'd spend three nights in Singapore, the next question is... where would I stay?

My travel tip was to base yourself around Marina Bay, and these would be two of my top recommendations for couples looking for a memorable city break.

✨ The Fullerton Bay Hotel
For a truly special stay, this boutique luxury hotel is hard to beat. Right on the waterfront, it offers beautiful Marina Bay views, elegant rooms and a fabulous rooftop bar – perfect for celebrating a special occasion.

🌆 Pan Pacific Singapore
If you're looking for modern five-star comfort with excellent facilities, the Pan Pacific is a fantastic choice. Its central Marina Bay location makes it easy to explore the city's iconic sights on foot, while the spacious rooms and impressive pool offer the perfect place to relax after a day of sightseeing.

The right hotel can make all the difference, especially when you only have a few nights. Choosing a great location means you spend less time travelling and more time enjoying everything Singapore has to offer.

💚 Which would you choose – boutique luxury or contemporary five-star?

If you’ve always thought of Singapore as somewhere to simply change planes, it might be time to think again.

This vibrant city is clean, green and incredibly easy to explore, making it the perfect place to spend three or four nights before heading on to another destination.

✨ Wander through the futuristic Gardens by the Bay
🍸 Enjoy rooftop cocktails overlooking Marina Bay
🍜 Sample incredible food, from Michelin-starred restaurants to bustling hawker centres
🌺 Stroll through colourful neighbourhoods like Little India and Kampong Glam
🚶‍♀️ Feel completely at ease exploring thanks to its excellent transport and walkable city centre

Whether you’re heading to Japan, Bali, Australia or boarding a cruise, Singapore transforms a long journey into part of the holiday itself.

Sometimes the best holidays don’t begin when you reach your final destination... they begin with an unforgettable stop along the way.

Have you ever spent more than a night in Singapore?
