Today marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Forth Road Bridge, Britain’s first long span suspension bridge. We provided the ground-breaking design for the bridge, the first structure of its size and scale in the UK. The total length of wire in its main suspension cables is 49,557km – enough to circle Earth 1.5 times. It was the first time friction bolting was used on a major bridge, a technique which has since become industry standard. Remarkably, the bridge was erected in just six years!
