Having worked on the orchestration and score preparation for 'Pluto's Crossing’, Andrew Sparrow's second orchestral suite, it's great to see the recording of the work by the Czech Film Orchestra now being released on Centaur Records in America in 2020.

The suite of 24 pieces in four movements was written to commemorate the historic fly-past of planet Pluto by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft in July 2015.

* Webinar - A Tribute to Telemann’s Fantasias - Monday 20 July *

To any flute, oboe, recorder players, and other instrumentalist friends:

Oboist George Caird has just completed a research article on Telemann’s Fantasias for flute for which I did the music prep and editing. There is going to be a Zoom webinar next Monday (20 July) about the pieces, hosted by George, plus an illustrious panel.

The invitation details are as follows:

****
Invitation to:
‘A Tribute to Telemann's Fantasias’
20 July, 18.00 - 20.00 GMT
for flute players, recorder players, oboists and all musicians and their audiences.

with
Alfredo Bernardini, baroque oboe
Rachel Brown, transverse flute and recorder
Nicholas Daniel, oboe
Paul Edmund-Davies, flute
presented by
George Caird

This seminar will celebrate Telemann's renowned 12 Fantasias for solo flute and explore their unique qualities in relation to modern and period flutes, oboes, recorders and other instruments. Panelists will discuss Telemann's originality and imagination in taking the player through twelve different keys and incorporating different styles, dance forms and music that, at times, imitates nature. Written 300 years ago, these works seem even more relevant to wind players today than ever before.
If you would like to attend this Zoom webinar, please fill in the registration form.

There are a limited number of spaces and these can be booked on a first come first served basis.
You will then receive a Zoom invitation (numbers permitting).

****

There are already quite a few signed up for the webinar, but if you are interested, click the link to fill in a short registration form. If nothing else, listen in to a presentation about these fascinating pieces!

I'm playing again for the fabulous Flamin' Dames on Friday evening at the Loft Bar in Brasserie Toulouse Lautrec, Kennington, London. We're doing our Ivor Novello/Noel Coward show (ahead of taking it to the Edinburgh Fringe in August), plus some 'Dames After 8' cabaret.

There might be one or two tickets left if you are in the area and fancy coming along :)

It's International Women's Day and recently there's been a lot of talk about the importance of women composers - and rightly so.

We shouldn't forget the hugely talented Dorothy Gow (1893-1982). She was linked to the Bloomsbury Set of intellectuals and studied with Vaughan Williams, although her style is far more Avant-garde.

I had the great pleasure of working with oboist George Caird to produce the First Edition of the score of Gow's 'Oboe Quintet in One Movement (1936)' a while back. It's a work that deserves much greater attention! The score and parts are available from SPMS Press.

You may be interested to know that it’s 100 years since Gustav Holst began work on the composition of his well-loved orchestral suite ‘The Planets’.

If you’re a fan of ‘The Planets’ and/or synthesised versions of classical pieces, there’s a new CD of the work by Mike Leghorn. The Holst scholar and musicologist Neil Arthur Williams, who is a former piano student of mine, was the advisor for the recording.

Neil has also contributed to an exhibition at the Holst Birthplace Museum called ‘Pop Goes The Planets’, which runs until 6 December. The museum’s website is www.holstmuseum.org.uk

The CD is available as a download from Amazon at:

Feeling very poignant today as I work on the Song-Cycle sequel to Ancel Newton's 'Doomed Youth', commemorating the First World War:

"And pile them high at Ypres and Verdun.
Shovel them under and let me work.........
I am the grass.
Let me work."

The CD recording of 'Chiaroscuro Suite' by Andrew Sparrow has now been released. SPMS worked throughout 2013 with composer Andrew Sparrow on the orchestration of 'Chiaroscuro Suite' and to prepare the full score and instrumental parts prior to the recording.

This recording ranges from John Barry inspired rich orchestration and melody, to classical piano, oboe and harp sonatas. The original compositions are beautifully recorded, melodically and sensitively interpreted by the Czech Film Orchestra.

The album can be purchased at Amazon UK and is also available on iTunes.
