Covent Garden Minuet Company

Covent Garden Minuet Company Book us for your event minuetcompany.org If you're interested in joining us, we'd love to hear from you.

We perform 18th century social dances, in particular the minuet, in full authentic costume, and aim to recapture the spirit and atmosphere of the grand events that took place in the Georgian Assembly Rooms. You don't need to have any dance experience, just enthusiasm and the desire to learn. Please contact us and we'll invite you to one of our classes or to our next workshop.

ANKLES

Caroline and Graham performing a lovely rendition of Telemann's gigue.

It's all in the ankles this dance and staying light on your feet.

Back in Georgian England, people would have admired the gentleman's calves, and the lady's elegance, as we do today 😄

A lovely one for couples.

HEARTS 💞

This dance is called Hearts because the pairs of dancers draw a heart shape with their steps!

The word heart is from Old English 'heorte', meaning the breast, soul, spirit, will, desire; courage; mind, intellect.

In medieval times, it was thought the heart kept our memories - hence the expression 'learning by heart'.

The heart shape we all know and love ❤️ dates back to around the late 1400s, often used in illustrations. The expression heart-shaped appeared in 1744.

To 'have one's heart in the right place' is from 1774.

MINUET FOR FIVE

It's quite unusual to have a minuet for five dancers and this one has quickly become one of the Company's favourites.

A catchy elegant chorus, some twirling and leaping, and of course lots of minuet steps. What's not to like?

REVERENCE

Practically every minuet dance starts and ends with a reverence.

It begins with a gentleman's elegant bow and a lady's demure curtsey.

A hello. An acknowledgement. An excuse for direct eye contact and assessing your dance partner. Is he a bore or a catch?

Maybe a handful of flirtatious words exchanged before the dance moves you across the floor. Feet moving swiftly, hands touching, aware of each others' bodies.

It ends, with another reverence.

A thank you.
A final breath together.
A promise of another dance.
