Documentaries are one of my favourite types of project to narrate. I always learn such a lot from the scripts.

A good documentary narrator should almost go unnoticed - the pictures are the star of the show, and the narrator should just be gently pointing things out to the viewer.

Here's little demo of me narrating a nature documentary.

If you're working on a documentary (or any other kind of project) that needs a narrator, if you send me a snippet of your script I'll record a demo for you for free so you can 'try before you buy'.

Calling all podcasters!

How do you start and end your show? Does it just start and end abruptly or do you have a recognisable intro and outro with music and a welcome to the show?

As a voiceover artist obviously I've created my own intro and outro for my podcast, 'Small Business Big Network', but I've also created them for other people's shows too.

I listen to quite a lot of podcasts and the ones that have a well-recorded introduction, and give you a clue as to what the content is going to be, always strike me as seeming more professional than those that just - start.

If you have a podcast but you're not confident about recording an intro or adding music, give me a shout. I have access to a library of royalty-free music and can create a really professional sounding introduction to your show, which might just bring you more listeners ๐Ÿ˜Š

My contact details are in my profile so get in touch if you'd like more info about this service.

Did you know a professional voiceover artist could save you time, and help you make more money?
No, Karl Douglas of Beverley Travel didn't know that either, until he hired me to record some messages for his phone system. The results were surprising!

Online learning is growing apace. I've noticed in my own business that I have been narrating more and more e-learning courses, and the range of sectors that are making use of online training is vast!

Here are some examples from my personal experience:

๐Ÿฉบ In the medical and healthcare sector, e-learning can be used to teach people how to use pieces of medical equipment, how to administer certain drugs, how to carry out various procedures and how to deal with different kinds of patients including those with dementia or other specific problems.

๐Ÿจ In the hotel industry e-learning can be used to train staff in hospitality and customer service.

๐Ÿ›Ž๏ธ In the public transport sector e-learning has been used to train staff in customer service.

๐Ÿ•The food sector uses e-learning to disseminate information on regulatory compliance.

๐ŸŒ Charities use e-learning to train staff and volunteers on topics such as safeguarding, and how to work with teams in other countries.

๐Ÿฆบ In industry e-learning is used to keep people up to date with health and safety regulations.

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Many types of business from manufacturing to retail use e-learning to teach staff how to use software and apps necessary for their work.

โ™ป๏ธ The renewable energy industry uses e-learning, including VR programmes, to train staff how to handle situations off-shore.

๐ŸŽ“ And of course the education sector uses e-learning from GCSE level right up to degree material.

The beauty of e-learning is that the learner can access it from anywhere with an internet connection at a time to suit them. They can learn at their own pace, and easily go back and re-visit anything they didnโ€™t quite understand.

A well-written course will keep the learner engaged with a variety of content. This can be as simple as incorporating puzzles and quizzes to test the knowledge acquired, right through to immersive and gamified learning which may include the use of VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality), to really put the learner at the heart of their training.

Have you experienced online learning? How did you find it?

This journey through the history of voice narration reveals not just technological shifts, but a consistent thread: the unique, profound connection forged

I narrate a lot of e-learning courses โ€“ its probably the genre of voiceover I work in the most and I really enjoy it. I always learn things from my scripts.

Iโ€™ve narrated courses for all sorts of industry sectors and on many different topics including hospitality, food safety, health and safety, safeguarding and more. This is a video demo about preventing the spread of infection in the workplace.

If youโ€™re a course creator, or instructional designer, (or maybe just someone who wants to monetise their knowledge with an online course), and you need help with the narration, give me a shout.

My services include recording and editing the audio, and cutting it into individual files ready to just drop into your project.

Iโ€™m always happy to record a few lines for you as a demo so you can hear how I would sound for your course โ€“ you get to try before you buy! ๐Ÿ˜„

One of the genres of voice over I work in most is e-learning.

Some learning providers tell me that they voice all their own content, which is great if it's something they enjoy doing, and it's something they are good at.

But sometimes, just because they wrote the course, it doesn't necessarily follow that they are the best person to narrate it...

In the world of e-learning, the right voice can make all the difference.

A professionally trained voice over artist will bring the course to life โ€“ and give it a human dimension.

They will know how to pace the narration โ€“ not too quickly so that information is lost, and not so slowly that the learners are bored. They will also know how to emphasise key points to bring out important information with the tone of their voice โ€“ something that may be lost when just reading text on a page.

They can make complicated subjects sound easy and keep learners engaged with a friendly and conversational tone, that is maintained throughout the programme. None of that is as easy as it sounds โ€“ it takes training and practice to do well!

It can be tempting to use an AI voice to narrate e-learning, but I've had instructional designers tell me that they have tried this and the learners just weren't engaged.

And if the learners aren't engaged they they aren't learning!

If you'd like a real human voice to narrate your e-learning courses give me a shout - I'm always happy to record a little bit so you can hear how I would sound for your project. My contact details are in my profile.

I was delighted to receive this compliment from one of my e-learning clients.

There is so much talk about AI taking over the work of voiceover artists, especially in the field of online learning, that I was really encouraged by this lovely feedback.

I'm hoping that all my other clients feel the same and will continue to use real humans for their projects too!

I'd love to know what your experience of AI voices in learning has been - either as a creator or as a learner. Let me know!

At a networking meeting a while ago, attendees were asked to discuss subliminal messages in their logos. I wasnโ€™t sure there was anything subliminal in mine (or not on purpose at least), but people were interested to hear the story behind my branding so I thought I would share it with you tooโ€ฆ

Obviously my logo is my name, but the font is very close to the way I actually write. We were taught quite an old fashioned style of joined up script with lots of loops at my primary school, and my handwriting hasnโ€™t changed much since then. โœ’๏ธ

My tag line came about when I was doing a branding exercise and writing down things about myself. I always wear dangly earrings, and as I wrote that down I had a lightbulb moment! Easy on the ears seemed a perfect description of how I would like people to perceive my voice โ€“ and I also think Iโ€™m pretty easy to work with too (maybe thatโ€™s the subliminal message!). ๐Ÿ‘‚

The little green thing hanging off the letter L is supposed to be an earring, though a lot of people mistake it for a microphone โ€“ which works just as well. ๐ŸŽค

The dot above the I is in the shape of a diamond, because alongside my dangly earrings I always wear a pair of diamond studs that my husband gave me before we were married. ๐Ÿ’

Finally the teal green colours are shades that I wear a lot, and I think they have a calming feeling โ€“ which hopefully is like my voice (another subliminal message perhaps).

I would love to know if there is a story behind your logo too!

How I became a Voiceover Artist

In 2011 my husband, who works in the chemical industry, was asked to go and work in the USA for a couple of years. To take up this fantastic opportunity I had to take a sabbatical from my job, and because of the kind of visa I had, I was unable to work in America โ€“ at least initially.

I used this opportunity to undertake some training. I already had some experience of voiceover as I used to work at Channel Seven (the local cable TV channel for North and North East Lincolnshire), but I had never had any formal training. I took a couple of acting courses, and singing lessons at my local community college, and then signed up for extensive voiceover training with Edge Studio, a very well respected company based in New York.

I trained with Edge for about 6 months with coaches in New York and Washington DC, at the end of this process I recorded my professional show reels.
