Bonfest Kirriemuir is just along the road from us - the town and the festival are well worth a visit! 🤘🎶

Friday's Fascinating Fact: Former AC/DC frontman Bon Scott was born in 1946 and grew up in the town of Kirriemuir, before moving to Australia.

His singing career started when he became a member of The Spektors, before replacing Dave Evans as the lead singer of AC/DC in 1974. The band's album 'Highway to Hell' reached the top 20 in the United States in 1979.

Bon Scott tragically died in 1980 at the age of 33, and his legacy lives on in Kirriemuir with the annual Bonfest rock music festival. A statue of Bon Scott stands in Bellie's Brae car park in the town, created by artist John McKenna and unveiled in 2016.

AC/DC fans won't want to miss Bonfest Kirriemuir 2025, taking place from 2 to 4 May. See https://www.bonfest.com/ for details.

So, how did we come to build a shepherd’s hut in Glenisla then?

Well, we have a shared love of campervanning, tiny houses and off-grid sustainable living and, over the last 15 or so years, Eck has fitted out several campervans as well as a narrow boat which was his home for a number of years.

We are inspired by living well in small spaces, being connected to nature, the landscape and the environment without compromising on comfort or style, and have brought all of this passion and experience to Bruadar - a lovingly hand-crafted shepherd’s hut in the hills of Glenisla where we both grew up.

Come and see for yourself why we love it so much!

It's !

Back in the spring of 2021 we fitted the floor at the shepherd's hut.

The maple floor was previously the floor of a community centre in the city of Dundee, a 45-minute drive away and home to the V&A museum.

The wood was salvaged by Hargreaves Reclaimed Flooring and we spent several days sanding it back and varnishing it, but it was well worth it – it still looks fantastic now and is a wee bit better for the environment than buying new.

Comfort – alongside protecting the – are key at our shepherd’s hut!

The hand-built double bed at Bruadar is fixed so you don’t have to make your bed up at the end of the day – and, just as importantly, is super comfy. The mattress is 100% recyclable and made from fibres that don’t cost the earth.

The towels and bedding are made from organic cotton or bamboo and the cookware provided is free from toxic chemicals.

Our shepherd’s hut has been fitted out with a modern bathroom which has been modelled on the neighbouring farm’s original lambing shed and has a rainfall-style shower and hot running water.

The water comes from a natural spring further up the hillside.

And for hardy souls, the River Isla runs along the foot of the hillside and there is a beautiful spot for swimming just a few hundred yards walk down the hill from Bruadar – although be aware that it is a fairly steep climb back up the hill!

Happy Monday everyone!

Did we mention how much there is to explore at our shepherd's hut? Bruadar is located on a hillside in Glenisla, the most westerly of the Angus glens, and just north of the 500-million-year-old Highland Boundary Fault – the great geological feature that divides the Scottish Highlands from the Lowlands.

The Cateran Trail, one of Scotland’s long-distance walks, passes through Glenisla, and the area also features heavily in the innovative The Cateran Ecomuseum, a museum without walls which aims to showcase everything that the area has to offer in an environmentally responsible way.

Here's a pretty awesome shot 📷 of the view from the hut looking west as the sun was setting, we honestly can't get enough of these views, hope you like them too! 🌅💚💚🌅
