😷At least 450 people were affected by the York cholera epidemic of 1832
⚰️Only 20 memorial stones survive in the small grassed area below the city walls, specially acquired for the burial of some of the 185 plague victims
🏥The Board of Health at first considered using the city’s ramparts or moats as burial grounds with York's parish graveyards almost full

🏰St Mary’s Tower (c.1324) is a prominent feature on the corner of Bootham and Marygate
⚔️Built to defend St Mary’s Abbey and it's occupants, the circular structure suffered severe damage in the Siege of 1644 when a mine was exploded underneath by Parliamentarian forces attacking York
👑Fierce fighting followed in the abbey grounds until Royalist troops drove the enemy back, killing or capturing 300 of them

⛪A hidden treasure, Holy Trinity Goodramgate is perhaps York’s least restored church
⛏️In existence by the late 11th century, most of the current structure dates mainly from the late medieval period
🙏Rare box pews inside from the 17th-19th centuries provided privacy for worshippers and helped keep drafts out on cold days

⛪The Bar Convent is the UK’s oldest living Catholic convent, which recently displayed a medieval scroll known as the Arma Christi
✝️The Convent was Established in 1686; when Catholicism was illegal in England
🤫A secret chapel can be found inside; invisible from the outside world!
🚪Eight doors provided a swift escape route from the chapel, and a priest hole exists under the floorboards

🤩History can be found at almost every turn in York
✝️Outside the city walls is Clementhorpe- an area believed to have acquired its name from the church dedicated to St Clements- later incorporated into a Benedictine nunnery, founded in the 12c
⛪Only a small segment of stone wall survives from the nunnery, which was suppressed in 1536
