The coastal road to the Applecross Peninsula, on the mainland just across the water from Skye, was only finished in the 70s, so it's fair to say that this is a pretty remote part of Scotland.

While a stay at Rhuroin feels like a chance to completely detach from the world for a while, there's a local community with an island-like sense of closeness that's well worth getting involved in.

There are numerous galleries to visit, the Attadale Gardens on the shores of Loch Carron, with their blend of history, beauty and artistic expression, as well the Wee Whistlestop Café with its popular fish Fridays.

But if you'd rather, you can simply spend a few days climbing the Bealach na Ba pass for spectacular sea views, wandering the waterfront and woodlands on the lookout for dolphins and otters, red squirrels and pine martens.

These are the iconic, conical trulli, probably the most recognisable feature of Puglia, the region that occupies Italy's "heel". But the area has so much more to offer than these striking buildings.

In the north, the Gargano Natural Park, sparsely populated except for a couple of coastal towns, is a hiking paradise of rocky bluffs, and coves lined by white cliffs, where boat trips can take you to swim off remote beaches.

Further south, Lecce is a sandstone wonder where narrow streets thread between historic architecture, and Bari, once merely the regional transport hub, is garnering a reputation for lively charm.

Then there's the cycle route that winds through olive groves and over an aqueduct, hot springs in Santa Cesarea and the hilltop town of Ostuni, "the white city", with its panoramic views of the Adriatic's sparkling waters.

Throw in Italy's unmatched passion for great food and wine, and you're looking at quite a trip.

Food, nooks, classic Cotswolds and the biggest bath ever seen - Alice from our PR team on her trip to the Double Red Duke.

We’ll remember our dinner for a long time. There’s a big emphasis on great produce and ingredients, and it really shows. I had a delicious wood-fired rice dish with mushrooms, which was new on the menu. The hispi cabbage with miso butter was also stunning!

We had such a relaxing time moving between all the different cosy nooks - sitting by the fireplace, reading the day's papers with a pint of local ale. There were board games and shelves of books but just sitting and taking in the cosy vibes was equally nice.

Bampton has to be one of the prettiest villages in the Cotswolds, with those iconic honey-hued cottages, picturesque streams and blossom trees in full bloom.

Our room must have had the biggest bath I have ever seen. I took a (very) long soak with 100 Acres toiletries and Classic FM blasting through on the Roberts radio.

Ideally, this is how close we'd always be to a good glass of wine.

These are a few of our favourite English vineyards you can stay at, enjoying great hospitality, basking in indulgent comfort and sampling the extremely local produce.

Comment if there's one you think we should add!

While our places in Kent come in all shapes and sizes, from crumbling cottages to contemporary townhouses, we do love discovering one of the county's great country pubs. The Milk House, in Cranbrook, is a fine example.

The former waystation and coaching inn is now a destination, drawing locals and travellers alike with its laid-back atmosphere, homely rooms, great menu and the careful selection of wine and ales from producers scattered across the surrounding countryside.

Sissinghurst Castle, with its Sackville-West gardens, is only a half-mile walk, Tenterden is a lovely place to wander and shop, and you can be you can get from the centre of London to the station at Staplehurst in about an hour, making it an easy one-night or weekend getaway.

Do not be alarmed if you see a cow walking through the village.

Hornstone Cottage is near Minchinhampton Common, which is one of the few places where "commoners" are still permitted to graze their horses and cattle. Now and again, one of the animals decides to take a wander.

You might stroll through yourself at some point, possibly ranging a bit further to visit the Stroud brewery or taking on one of the many walks that lead right from the door and pass some lovely Cotswold pubs. You can do them on horseback, too.

With the farm around the cottage home to butterflies, orchids and wildflowers in 30 acres of Designated Ancient Woodland, while public footpaths link to the Wysis Way and you can find local treats, good coffee and fabulous burgers at The Jolly Nice Farm Shop, this is a place to be like the cows - just wander and graze.

🌟NEW - The Courtyard Wing, Penpont

If you were to come here as a child, you'd have memories for the rest of your life that would seem unreal.

It's a sprawling place that you'd spend a full day simply exploring when you arrived, dashing up to the attic rooms, through the glasshouse, then out into the woods and along the river, only coming back inside when it started to get dark.

Adults might be more interested in the sauna on the riverbank, trekking off into Bannau Brycheiniog, or fly fishing on the mile-long beat that starts at the bottom of the garden, but everyone can come together at the end of the day and share what will be a truly wild range of stories.

Our recent weekend in Whitstable:

Friday
We’d planned our Friday night meal in advance thanks to a tip-off from the owners of The Cook’s Cottage, themselves keen chefs. It was a place called Harbour Street Tapas, a small restaurant on a street corner that steers away from the dark wood look that a lot of tapas bars go for, opting instead for big windows and a pale interior. Everything was fresh and delicious, but the clear highlight was a superb Basque cheesecake.

Saturday
Saturday morning meant a stop at Garage, a locally renowned roastery which has a few locations in the area. Coffee in hand, we set out through town to the beach. The walk along the seafront was a blustery experience, but certainly cleared out the fog. We saw the iconic coloured beach huts and crunched on the shingle for a while, without the time to take on the walk to Herne Bay. After the walk, we went for breakfast at Farm & Harper then wandered through town and down to the Harbour Market, where Harbour Books was a definite favourite.

Sunday
We could happily have repeated our Saturday morning with slight variations. A new café, a different bookshop, perhaps some browsing of the many antique shops we’d passed, on the hunt for a proper souvenir. There were also local spots like Reculver Towers and the Oare Marshes Nature Reserve that we’d have been keen to check out if we had more time. Whitstable was the sort of place that you could stay in for a week and do a great deal of not very much in the most pleasant way possible.

Almost a mile to the nearest village and more than three to the nearest town, with a hot tub down the path at the end of the garden - this is unparalleled peace and seclusion.

That being said, there's plenty to do in the area if you feel the need to leave, with waterfall walks from the door, the Teifi Pools, the Celtic rainforest at Gwenffrwdd Dinas, The Botanic Gardens of Wales and so many great places to eat that the owner leaves you a food guide to the area.

Turn up and never leave, or explore all day and end with some stargazing from the hot tub.

Did you know, you can get from London to the furthest point of Kent in under two hours on the train?

The whole county, full of vineyards, castles, pubs, beaches and plenty more, is just sitting there, waiting for you to rumble down into it. We've picked out a few of our favourite places in Kent here, but there are tonnes more, all personally inspected by our team and perfect for a weekend out in the country.
