Game of Thrones and Outlander – the castle connections

Connections Between Game of Thrones and Outlander

Scotland’s stunning landscapes and historic architecture have provided the backdrop for many iconic TV series, including Game of Thrones (GoT) and Outlander. Although these two shows have distinct storylines and settings, they share several connections in terms of locations, actors, and overall influence. Book your Game of Thrones and Outlander tours online or phone / Whatsapp 07305 294773
Shared Actors
While Game of Thrones and Outlander do not share a lot of actors, there are some notable overlaps:

Clive Russell: Russell portrayed Brynden Tully (the Blackfish) in GoT and had a role in Outlander as Simon Fraser, the elder Lovat. His commanding presence and portrayal of cunning characters link him to both productions.
Tobias Menzies: While Menzies is most famously associated with Outlander as both Frank Randall and Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall, his earlier work includes portraying Edmure Tully in GoT. His ability to embody vastly different characters showcases his versatility and makes him a notable connection between the two series. Game of Thrones and Outlander tours of Scotland
Diana Rigg (Indirect Connection): While Rigg (Lady Olenna Tyrell in GoT) did not appear in Outlander, her Avengers co-star Patrick Macnee is referenced as an inspiration by Outlander creator Diana Gabaldon. This tangential link connects the two series through shared influences in British acting history.
Filming Locations
Scotland has been a prime location for Outlander, while Game of Thrones came to Scotland once to film at the Scottish castle featured in five films and TV series :

Doune Castle: This historic castle in Stirling served as Castle Leoch in Outlander and also appeared in the Game of Thrones pilot as Winterfell. Although the latter series later used different locations for Winterfell, Doune Castle remains a shared visual link between the two. The Feast of Winterfell was filmed in the Great Hall at Doune Castle . Doune also featured in the films Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the Outlaw King and Mary, Queen of Scots .
Scottish Highlands: While not explicitly featured in Game of Thrones, the rugged beauty of Scotland’s landscapes bears a striking resemblance to Westeros’ northern territories, such as the lands beyond the Wall and Winterfell. Both series heavily rely on dramatic natural scenery to evoke a sense of history and mysticism. Glencoe is featured in the opening sequence in Outlander in the early seasons.
Cultural Influences and Themes
Both Outlander and Game of Thrones draw heavily from history, myth, and legend, some of which are rooted in Scottish heritage:

Outlander is steeped in Scottish culture, particularly during the Jacobite era, while Game of Thrones incorporates elements of Celtic, Norse, and medieval traditions, which are prevalent in Scotland.
Both shows depict feuding clans and families, with Outlander exploring Highland clans and GoT featuring the rivalries of noble houses such as the Starks, Lannisters, and Baratheons.
Fan Tourism
Both series have sparked fan interest in Scotland. Outlander enthusiasts flock to locations like Culloden Battlefield and Doune Castle, while GoT fans visit crossover sites or nearby filming hubs in Northern Ireland and beyond. The Outlander effect refers to the huge increase in visitors from the USA and around the world in visiting the film locations in Scotland .

While Game of Thrones and Outlander differ significantly in tone and narrative, their connections through shared actors, locations, and cultural influences highlight Scotland’s pivotal role in shaping fantasy and historical storytelling. Fans of both series continue to celebrate these ties through tourism and fandom culture.

Midhope Castle is an ancient Scottish castle which was virtually unknown until about 10 years ago when it became Lallybroch in Outlander. Take our private tour of Outlander’s Lallybroch with Private Tours Edinburgh – just one of Scotland’s amazing Outlander castle film locations.

Fans of the hit TV series *Outlander* will be thrilled to discover the magic of Scotland by visiting some of the iconic locations featured in the show. For many, the fictional home of Jamie Fraser, Lallybroch, is one of the most beloved spots. However, the question often arises: is there a real Lallybroch in Scotland? The answer is both yes and no.

In *Outlander*, Lallybroch is the name given to the family estate of Jamie Fraser, the dashing Highland warrior played by Sam Heughan. It is portrayed as an idyllic and picturesque 18th-century estate with stunning architecture and rolling landscapes. While Lallybroch itself is fictional, the real-world location used for filming these iconic scenes is Midhope Castle, a beautiful but modest tower house nestled in the Scottish countryside.

# # # Midhope Castle: The Real Lallybroch

Midhope Castle, located on the Hopetoun Estate near South Queensferry, just outside of Edinburgh, serves as the external location for Lallybroch. This historic tower house dates back to the 16th century and is now a listed building. Although it is privately owned, the estate has opened the grounds to *Outlander* fans who are eager to walk in the footsteps of their favorite characters.

Visiting Midhope Castle feels like stepping into the world of *Outlander*. The castle is surrounded by peaceful woodlands and open fields, making it easy to imagine the life of the Frasers unfolding in this tranquil setting. Even though the interior of the castle is not accessible to the public and remains largely derelict, fans can still enjoy the external façade, which has become iconic due to its appearance in the series. Whether you're a die-hard fan or simply a lover of history and architecture, the sight of Midhope Castle is sure to transport you into the world of *Outlander*.

# # # Private Tours Edinburgh: Exploring Outlander Locations

But the experience doesn’t end at Lallybroch. Private Tours Edinburgh ensures that fans can also explore other notable filming locations such as Blackness Castle, which stands in for Fort William, Linlithgow Palace (Wentworth Prison in the series), and the charming village of Culross, which represents the fictional town of Cranesmuir. These tours offer a unique opportunity to delve into both the world of *Outlander* and the rich history of Scotland.

# # # The Magic of Outlander and Scotland’s Real History

While *Outlander* may be a work of fiction, the locations used for filming are steeped in real Scottish history. The castles, estates, and villages featured in the show have fascinating pasts that predate *Outlander* by centuries. This combination of fictional narrative and real-world history is part of what makes visiting these sites so magical.

Scotland itself is often described as a character in *Outlander* – with its dramatic landscapes, ancient castles, and enchanting villages. The land is filled with tales of its own – stories of clans, battles, love, and loss – that resonate deeply with the themes of the show.

By taking a private tour of Lallybroch (Midhope Castle) with Private Tours Edinburgh, you are not only stepping into the world of *Outlander*, but also getting a taste of Scotland’s rich cultural and historical heritage. The tour is a must-do for fans of the series, as well as those who wish to explore Scotland’s history through the lens of one of the most popular television shows of recent times.
