A (very) brief history of the tuk tuk
Where did the tuk tuk come from? Why is it called a tuk tuk? If you’ve ever wondered, you’re in the right place.
The iconic tuk tuk has evolved from the humble rickshaw. Originally pulled by hand, then propelled by pedalling, Japanese engineers added an engine and the auto rickshaw was born.
But it was in Thailand where the tuk tuk as we know it was truly developed. Since the early 1930s, samlors(three-wheelers) were exported to Thailand from Japan. And the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of Japan donated 20,000 used three-wheelers, most of which found their way to the streets of Bangkok.
However, the manufacture and supply of samlors ended in the 1960s, and Thai drivers found themselves with a problem. Spare parts became increasingly scarce, and by the late 1960s, these vehicles were in danger of being wiped out.
