Using sing-song speech, such as nursery rhymes and songs, helps babies learn language! Fascinating new research is teaching us more about how babies learn language and is backing up so much of what we encourage you to do in Sing and Sign, right from our youngest Babes course upwards. 🥰
Teams of scientists at the University of Cambridge and Trinity College Dublin have discovered that in their early months babies primarily learn languages through rhythmic rather than phonetic information. By studying baby's brain waves, the researchers showed that the individual sounds of speech are not processed reliably until around seven months, even though most infants can recognise familiar words by this point. The scientists suggest that instead rhythm forms the initial scaffold of language and babies 'add in' the phonetic sounds gradually as they get older. 😊
So what does this mean for you and your little ones? Well the researchers say:

“Parents should talk and sing to their babies as much as possible or use infant-directed speech like nursery rhymes because it will make a difference to language outcome.” 🎶🥰
