Blackberries and apples are now in our hedgerows around Cuplahhills as the season starts to change. Mellow, misty mornings giving way to sunny afternoons - a perfect time to visit and explore.

The most sensible article I've seen on this to date.

Our Badger population at Cuplahills has rocketed in the past 30 years due to their protected status. During this time the hedgehog numbers plummeted to the point whereby last year I saw my first one at the farm since I was a boy. All ground nesting bird numbers are down despite us as a farming family investigating heavily in wildlife habitat specifically for them around the farm. This includes 6ha of wild bird seed plots, 5 miles of hedges, small tree stances, 6m margins around all arable fields, 15ha of green manure each year and designated species rich grassland. T
The badgers seek out and destroy the nests that contain the eggs. The badger dig up all of the wild bee and wasp nests along the farm tracks, hedge boundaries and through the woodlands. In addition the badgers dig up our community woodland footpaths looking for worms, build huge setts that renders areas of land useless and due to their protected status any work that needs done near a badger set is either not allowed or requires huge expensive in the form of badger monitoring experts, surveys and protection measures.
BUT WHY? To protect an animal at the top of the food chain with no predator.
It's high time the badger numbers were drastically reduced. Protecting the voracious badger has upset the natural balance in the countryside. I for one would rather see more groundnesting birds thriving and bees helping to pollinate our essential food source. Badgers may look cute, which as far as I can see is the only reason they are protected, but the are nothing more than a voracious predator that is causing serious environmental imbalances and costing the general public huge amounts of money to protect.

Those of us lucky enough to live in badger cull zones are seeing a welcome rise in hedgehog numbers, although the once numerous waders and ground nesting birds are almost wiped out and will not return.

Our vulnerable wildlife cannot cope with the massive overabundance of such a voracious generalist predator, which wipes out one food source and moves on to the next. It's high time we started taking the bumblebee situation more seriously - it's been a disastrous year for them, with badgers grubbing up more and more nests as earthworms became harder to find.

Time we followed Germany's lead and carried out a licensed badger cull every year. Better for our cattle, and miles better for our wildlife and biodiversity.

Cuplahills is a working family farm. Our guests love being able to visit the wee goats who make their home in the field next to our lodges - and to just kick back and make the very most of our luxury accommodation that overlooks the Eden Valley, St Andrews and the sea beyond. What's keeping you?

It is hard to believe that on that tiny spit of land that juts out into the Eden estuary you will find not one, not two ... but six courses of St Andrews Links. The Old, New, Jubilee, Eden, Strathtyrum and Balgove. This shot is taken from the top of Lucklawhill - above Cuplahills Farm - and a favourite destination of those heading out for a walk from our luxury lodges. The view is spectacular - to St Andrews, the home of golf and the wonderful beaches of West and East Sands.

The Fife Coastal Path snakes around our shoreline and is enjoyed by many-a-guest staying at our lodges. You can dip in and out with bite-sized chunks of the path at many points. This snap - with one of the beach access points at West Sands - looks back towards Cuplahills over the dunes.

In 2012 Stephen & Amanda, the third generation to farm at Cuplahills Farm, embarked on a special journey that began in a hay meadow and was to become the tranquil idyll that is now synonymous with St Andrews Country Lodges.

By May 2011, we had seen the safe arrival of our two children Freddie and Freya. The following summer of 2012 we were the proud owners of two luxury eco-cabins. After 5 years helping to create holiday memories for hundreds of families, both local and international, we decided to complete the St Andrews Country Lodges project with the addition of 2 more luxury lodges, giving guests the opportunity to stay any one of our 4 beautiful properties.

We were now well on our way to reaching our destination, which would see #Cuplahills as the first choice in rural self-catering holidays.
