Portugal and the United Kingdom share one of the oldest alliances in the world.

Many people don't realise that the friendship between our two nations stretches back more than 650 years. The Anglo-Portuguese Alliance, signed in 1373, is still in force today, making it the oldest active political and military alliance in existence.

Throughout history, our countries have stood together in times of war and peace. During the Napoleonic Wars, British and Portuguese soldiers fought side by side to defend Portugal from invasion. The Duke of Wellington's victories at places such as Bussaco and Torres Vedras helped preserve Portuguese independence.

Our connection goes beyond battles and treaties. British merchants helped develop the Port wine trade that made Porto famous around the world. Portuguese explorers opened new sea routes that changed global history, while British sailors, traders and travellers became part of Portugal's story.

Today, thousands of Britons have chosen to make Portugal their home, drawn by the warmth of the people, the culture, the history and the sunshine. Likewise, generations of Portuguese have studied, worked and built successful lives in the UK.

In a world where friendships between nations can come and go, the bond between Portugal and Britain has endured for centuries. It is a relationship built not only on treaties, but on mutual respect, shared history and genuine affection between two peoples.
