We still have a couple of places left on the Sustainable Flower Arranging workshops on the 19th July in the orchard! Lucy and Jo from create spectacularly beautiful arrangements of flowers and foliage and we can't wait to learn from them 😄🌷🌱🍀⚘️

It's been a busy weekend making hay and haylage in the orchard! We leave strips of uncut grass between the trees, partly because it's easier and more practical, and partly because it provides excellent habitat and allows late flowering species to go to seed. 20 years ago this was a rye grass ley, now it has a whole host of grasses, herbs and flowers, including a few orchids, and still feeds our hungry horses all year round!

We are very excited that we won a bronze award at the British Cider Championships
🥉

We've never entered before, thought we would have a go in the Newcomers class, and are delighted to now be able to say that we produce award winning cider 😋🥳

Plus, entries to the newcomers class get some feedback, so we can keep refining and maybe come back with a gold another year!

Spring has sprung in the orchard 🥳

🌸 Blossom is here, so hopefully lots of apples in the autumn if the bees do their pollinating jobs, they're already out and about buzzing between trees
🐦 Swallows are back and already prepping a nest in the stable
🌺 Blossom timing differs between varieties of apple trees - the tremletts are out in force, but next door the redstreaks are taking their time
🚜 We turned the composting horse manure this weekend
🪱 Lots of worm activity in the compost heap = faster breakdown of horse manure ready for use next year!
🐜 Amazing how much wildlife lives in compost heaps
🐉 Slow worms look like snakes but are actually lizards

We spent our weekend racking off the 3 barrels of cider that we made in 2024. Racking off involves pumping the freshly fermented cider into a second barrel, leaving behind the residue of the fermentation process. Sometimes the barrels go through a second round of fermentation after racking off, it's always lovely to walk into the barn to the soft plopping sounds of the gas escaping through the airlocks. 🍎

We couldn't resist a quick taste test! All were crisp and dry, but with marked differences due to the combination of apple varieties used in each barrel. Our favourite was the combination of 6 different varieties in the glass on the right, but the cloudy colour shows that this one isn't quite finished fermenting, so the taste will change. We look forward to a second taste soon! 🍏

Easter is here, and so busy season begins, we love it!! Our traditional crumbly fudge is flying at the moment - a perfect sweet treat 😋 🍬🍭

It's pruning time! We have been giving our Somerset Redstreaks a good tidy up, pruning out any disease, allowing lots of light into the middles and hoping to encourage the trees to produce as many apples as possible. Its hard work, but a lovely way to spend weekends 🍎🍏🌞

It's been a very festive fudge week this week, with orders going out to and Mosterton Village stores. Our fudge makes a great stocking or hamper filler, for a sweet treat or a last minute gift 😍
