Chosen by Alastair Sawday in The Times, 2010, as his favourite B&B for a relaxing break, Lower House offers all the advantages of staying in Hay-on-Wye whilst enjoying complete peace, in beautiful, romantic surroundings near to the Black Mountains. Guests have all the advantages of staying in Hay, yet can enjoy complete peace, in idyllic surroundings, with the Black Mountains walkable from the door.

Crocosmia in full blazing bloom amongst the tetrapanax. The stone wall was built by Mr LH several decades ago, the stones carefully tessellated over many weeks. Many of the stones were dug up from Lower House, found in the stream, or repurposed from old buildings on the land.

Plas Bach, our romantic stream-side retreat for two, nestled in the box garden. The verandah is one of the last spots in our 7 acre garden to get the evening sun, and is the perfect place to end the day with a glass of wine. We’re a lovely 20 minute walk into Hay across the Offa’s D**e path, or a few minutes drive along a quiet lane.

The tetrapanax has gone nuts this year, sending out shoots and filling up the flower bed. One of Mrs LH’s favourites.

A jolt to the past. This (rather terrifying) photo popped up on Facebook memories this morning. It’s Mrs LH in scarecrow form, from 12 years ago. Her clothes and glasses, and the recently shorn fleece of one of our black sheep. It definitely did the job of scaring the birds (and grandchild, and anyone else that chanced upon it).

The newly painted ponds have been filled with water once again. They’re still not flowing as the pump still needs replacing. The area below the medlar tree has also been redone. The roots were pushing up the cobbles, so Mr LH has dug them up and replaced them with gravel, which is much more amenable to roots. You can see the splendid rambling rose growing over a tall tree on the edge of the woods in the background too.

And yes, the garden hose is still there, spoiling the photos!
