Today is Wessex Day, the Feast day of Saint Aldhelm/Ealdhelm, considered the patron saint of Wessex.

Wessex, an Anglo-Saxon kingdom in South and south-west England, became the most powerful English kingdom by the 10th century.

The name Wessex was used by Thomas Hardy for the area of south-west England (especially our county of Dorset) where his novels are set.

The name is still widely used today by many companies in the region.

To mark this Day, we will be flying the Wessex Flag over County Hall.

90 years ago today, on the 19th May 1935, T.E. Lawrence died.

T.E. Lawrence was a British scholar, writer and soldier who mobilised the Arab Revolt in WW1.

He spent his final years, living at his cottage at Cloud’s Hill near Bovington. He died due to the injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident at Bovington. The official statement said it was 'tragic' that 'such a remarkable career should have been ended by a simple road accident'. On his death Winston Churchill said "In Lawrence we have lost one of the greatest beings of our time.”

Lawrence’s life was further immortalised 27 years later in the 1962 film “Lawrence of Arabia’, directed by David Lean and starring Peter O’Toole.

There's lots to discover about TE Lawrence in Wareham. Don’t miss the stunning effigy in St Martin’s Church in Wareham. Although originally made for St Paul’s Cathedral, it was finally installed in this small church in Wareham due to controversy around Lawrence's life. You can also see an exhibition about Lawrence in Wareham Town Museum.
