On day 4 we stopped at Katakolon in Greece. This is the gateway port to visit the famous Olympia ruins. (The famous birthplace of the Olympic Games.) 🇬🇷🏛️🎖️

We decided that we would get off the ship, but just to “potter” (who remembers that post 😂 afew weeks back ?) in Katakolon itself .
What a pretty place .. once a quiet Greek fishing village it now hosts cruise-ships & our friendly taverna owner told us that between the end of August & the end of October he was expecting around 35 ships 😳😳😳

We were the only ship ‘in’ on our day; and as most people had gone off to Olympia… we had the place ‘relatively’ to ourselves 🩵

We enjoyed a lovely quiet lunch overlooking the harbour…how nice just to relax, without any schedule !

Spent time talking to the taverna owner.. who instigated giving us a Greek lesson… 🤓
…sadly I haven’t done too well with the lesson …and can only remember one word which is ‘thank you ..’ and since I did not see it written down …

I gave my talk "The changes and Dramas of 35 years working in the Travel industry" back in July 2023 at Kenilworth Golf Club... at that time I was on the speakers "circuit" as they called it, and was quite happy driving all around Warwickshire in my little mini chatting to all sorts of groups - (mostly WIs but other organisations too.)

This period in my life (which lasted about 6 years - and during COVID the talks continued, but via ZOOM) certainly snapped me out of having a fear of public speaking...😂😂 and now I have lost count of the number of times I have given this talk (in various versions changed over the years) ... some of the original venues have even asked to come back and talk for a second time!

Anyway... I am waffling on... this chap met me in 2023 when I spoke at the golf club, in Kenilworth, and then got in touch with me this year for some holiday help...

The rest is now history - we have made a booking for him... and all is good in the world 🌍

TRAVEL isn’t always about the hotel, the cruise-ship, the villa..

For me it is about the people you meet and how they make you feel, the stories they tell you that make a lovely memory of that place 💓

This bar-man in Sicily found us a shady spot on his terrace and then chatted to us about his business …

He asked if he could make me a special cocktail with a Sicilian twist!
Of course it involved lemons 🍋

We sat there, under the shade of a lime 🍋‍🟩 tree 🌳

Recipe hand-written for us to re-make the same cocktail … but will I keep my promise of ‘I’ll make this again once home?’

I really do love nothing more than the beauty of flowers. On my recent cruise, our very first port of call was in Sicily …

It was rather warm …
Phone reported 35 degrees …
Bar man serving drinks to us said ‘be careful, it actually will feel like 45 degrees - the heat has blown over from Africa’

The last week has been all about fixing things … even whilst I wasn’t here (because I was on my own holidays).. two “things” needed fixing …. When I say ‘things’ - I do mean bookings…..

A certain ‘orange’ airline cancelled my customers’ evening flight whilst they were waiting at Geneva airport to come home - (due to storms at Luton) at the end of a wonderful trip around Switzerland….
Travel Counsellors paid for their overnight stay at the airport & also paid for their revised arrangements to get home the next day … why ? ATOL protection…. It was a Travel Counsellors package holiday, so it is our responsibility to get you home ❤️‍🩹

Next up ..
Cancelled ferry between Jersey and Guernsey… No ferries now running for the rest of 2026 between the two islands… I have rebooked the customer on a flight now instead … which Travel Counsellors have paid for… Why? Customers are covered by ATOL again …on a Travel Counsellor’s package holiday.
Again, it is Travel Counsellors’ responsibility to get the customer from A to B. ❤️‍🩹

This week…
Air traffic control system failure… my customer’s holiday was cancelled while she was waiting on the tarmac to take off …
She has returned to her home for two nights, I managed to rebook her to travel three days later on a brand-new holiday ❤️‍🩹

So as you can see, travel can often be quite a wobbly thing… When it is going well, it is going really well… But it is all too often that things occur, that are out of everybody’s control… and that is when I step into my own, and I’m here to fix things !!

I have a 24/7 Duty Office who assist me at these times of crisis… but the overall message here is that it is horrendous trying to fix something yourself; especially when you are away from home… and it could be costly too….I am here, at the end of the phone… and I will always look after you !

This next lovely customer found me in a very special way…

She was first told to “try LUCY” by a very dear mutual friend of ours, who heartbreakingly is no longer with us. It means so much to me that, all these years later, she is still choosing to book her holidays through me and we are still in touch.
