Visiting Lake Sevan is one of the highlights of a trip to Armenia. It combines nature, culture, and relaxation in a way few places do.

🌊 Why visit Lake Sevan?

1. One of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world
Sitting at about 1,900 meters above sea level, it’s often called the “Jewel of Armenia.” The scale and deep blue water are impressive.

2. Beautiful beaches & swimming
In summer, locals come here to swim and relax. It’s one of the few places in Armenia where you can enjoy a proper beach vibe.

3. Sevanavank Monastery views
The iconic Sevanavank Monastery sits on a hill overlooking the lake, offering incredible panoramic views—especially at sunset.

4. Fresh local food (especially fish)
Lake Sevan is famous for its trout (ishkhan). Eating fresh fish by the water is part of the experience.

5. Easy day trip from Yerevan
It’s only about an hour from Yerevan, making it perfect for a day trip or a relaxing overnight stay.

6. Peaceful nature & fresh air
The open landscapes, mountains, and cool breeze make it a great escape from city heat.

Davit Garejy is a vast complex of rock-hewn monasteries and caves spread across a semi-desert area near the border with Azerbaijan. It was founded in the 6th century by Saint David Garejeli, one of the Assyrian Fathers who helped spread Christianity in Georgia.

✨ What makes it special

🪨 Cave monasteries
Hundreds of chambers carved directly into the cliffs—chapels, cells, and storage rooms—create a surreal, almost ancient-city feel.

🎨 Medieval frescoes
Some caves (especially in the Udabno area) contain beautiful but fragile wall paintings dating from the 8th–13th centuries.

🌄 Landscape
Unlike the lush mountains elsewhere in Georgia, this region feels almost like a desert—wide, quiet, and golden. It’s very different from Tbilisi.

🙏 Active religious site
Part of the complex (Lavra monastery) is still active, with monks living there today.

🥾 Hiking & views
You can hike up the ridge for sweeping views across Georgia and into Azerbaijan

Vardzia is a massive rock-cut monastery complex, carved into the side of a mountain. At its peak, it had hundreds of caves, tunnels, and rooms—almost like an ancient underground city.

⛪ 2. Rich history from medieval Georgia

It dates back to the 12th century, during the reign of Queen Tamar. It served as both a religious center and a fortress protecting the region.

🎨 3. Beautiful frescoes

Inside the main church, you’ll find well-preserved wall paintings, including a famous portrait of Queen Tamar herself—rare for that era.

🌄 4. Dramatic landscape

It’s set in a rugged valley along the Kura River, surrounded by cliffs and wide open views—perfect for photography and just soaking in nature.

🚶 5. Fun to explore

You can walk through:
• Narrow tunnels
• Hidden stairways
• Old living quarters

It feels like exploring a real-life maze carved in stone.
