Had a great time hosting Paul (Paul Leo) and Don from the USA and helping plan their vacation in Georgia! Here we are bartering for old posters at Dry Bridge market and visiting a Soviet bunker in Nadzaladevi district (h/t Tornike თხუნელა Kapanadze). Paul and Don write: “Timothy was incredibly helpful in helping me plan our trip to Georgia. He helped me think through our itinerary, made activity suggestions, and even made dinner reservations for us. Timothy also served as our guide the first two days upon our arrival in Tbilisi which made the start of our journey so much easier. Spectacular late 12th-century frescoes at Vardzia, including important donor portraits of the Georgian monarchs Tamar I and her father Giorgi III. In its heyday Vardzia must have appeared like a wonder of the world, practically a massive multipurpose apartment building built into the mountain cliff. Earthquake, invasion, and neglect have devastated it, but the beautiful murals at the church still give an inkling of Vardzia's ancient glory. The portrait of Tamar is particularly important from a historical perspective, as I explain in the video.

Enjoying a relaxing natural swim in Meskheti, Georgia. The Mtkvari is quite clean this high up and has some lovely sections which are both calm and deep enough for jumping! The water is chilly but not too cold, and as a bonus, there is a hot spring which someone has fed into a small swimming pool, so you can enjoy both a hot and cold bath.

A very lovely late-Soviet mosaic in Likani, outside a former sanatorium which is currently used as housing for refugees from Abkhazia. Amongst the many Soviet mosaics in Georgia, this one is one of my favorites -- standing to me for its whimsical character, naturalistic design, and bright, well-preserved colors. What's your favorite Soviet-era mural in Georgia?

Do you have any idea why these strange creatures are carved on this 14th century belltower in Georgia? I suspect they might be an addition from a much later period -- probably not "dinosaurs" but rather mythical/fantastical creatures such as dragons. What are your thoughts?

While hiking up to the Gergeti Trinity church, we spotted this lovely Apollo butterfly hanging out on a thistle with a little red bug which turned out to be a burnet moth! It's always incredible to see the variety of plants and animals out and about in the glorious Georgian mountain summers.

Sometimes we just go exploring and see what we find! Me and Nikita Ivanov went off-roading up a desolate valley in the far back corner of Tsalka and discovered this amazingly well-preserved work of religious folk art tucked away in an abandoned Greek village. Georgia is a land of incredible diversity and beauty, and the typical tourist routes only cover a small fraction. It constantly amazes what treasures can be found hidden away in the forgotten regions where nobody goes.
