Chugureti, Tbilisi - one of the neighborhoods you MUST visit in Georgia. 🇬🇪

In 1818, Swabian Germans founded a colony here called Neu-Tiflis. Unlike the agricultural German colonies elsewhere in Georgia, Neu-Tiflis was built by craftsmen, engineers, doctors, and entrepreneurs.
The neighborhood soon became one of the most European parts of Tbilisi, with some of the city’s first watchmakers’ workshops, pharmacies, European-style bakeries, breweries - and even its first cinema.
Later, Chugureti attracted wealthy merchants, industrialists, architects, and foreign émigrés. Persian Prince Bahman Mirza Qajar lived here, as did the Pitoev family and architect Albert Salzmann, who designed many buildings in the neighborhood.

🥨☕️If you’re a fan of sitting down at a cozy café and having a nice breakfast, Tbilisi has plenty of lovely spots for you to try.
CO:CO Coffee Collective - a new project near Lado Gudiashvili Square, located in a historic building. You can sit in a traditional Georgian courtyard surrounded by shushabandi vines, have a cup of coffee, and enjoy a toast.
Flowers and Lovers - another spot near Lado Gudiashvili Square. The romance of Georgian courtyards comes with delicious breakfasts here.
Karaqi Breakfast - a new spot from the beloved Karaqi. They make excellent croissants, and now you can actually have them for breakfast, with serious fillings like roast beef.
Spot by Chiti - very delicate syrniki and pancakes.
Daisy - really tasty and filling breakfasts, plus genuinely delicious croissants with strawberries.
Kartli Joys - only the ones in Vake have those delicious draniki and omelets.

There’s a neighborhood in Tbilisi that was shaped by a volcano. 🌋
Let’s go for a walk, and I’ll tell you the story.
To understand it, we need to travel back more than 200 years to southwestern Germany.
The region was struggling with poverty, overcrowding, and repeated wars. At the same time, many Swabian Germans believed Christ’s Second Coming was near — and that salvation awaited them in the East, at the foot of Mount Ararat. The Church considered these beliefs heretical.
Then came the volcano.
In 1815, Mount Tambora erupted in Indonesia, causing global temperatures to drop. 1816 became the “Year Without a Summer”: crops froze, and parts of Europe even saw snow in summer.
Famine, taxes, and religious persecution pushed many Swabian Germans toward the Caucasus. Some settled near Kukia, next to Tbilisi, and founded Neu-Tiflis - “New Tiflis.”
So, in a roundabout way, a volcano thousands of kilometers away helped shape one of Tbilisi’s neighborhoods.

I’ve recently visited one of the most non-touristy regions of Georgia and I wanted to say that this was a wonderful experience. Stunning nature, unique wine, freshest air and such a tasty food, that you just want to stay there forever. For all my beans enthusiasts out there - the best lobio and lobiani is in Racha-Lechkhumi. I’m serious, I’ll die on that hill.
And the wine is something else - I don’t like semi-sweets, but those…
I’m in awe and will return. And will be happy to invite you with me on that journey✨

🍃 Did you know Georgia has been growing tea for almost 180 years?

It’s one of those Georgian stories that somehow doesn’t get nearly enough attention.

Georgia’s tea history began in 1847, and by the end of the 19th century, tea was already being produced on an industrial scale. To help develop the industry, tea specialists were brought all the way from China - a fascinating connection between two very different tea cultures.

For decades, Georgian tea was an important part of the country’s agricultural life, especially in the lush, subtropical regions of Western Georgia. But political and economic changes in the late 20th century nearly brought the industry to an end.

Today, Georgian tea is making a quiet comeback. One of the people helping to revive this tradition is S***a Bitadze. He grows tea on his own plantation, supports other local farmers, and has created a wonderful Tea Museum in Tbilisi, where you can learn about Georgia’s tea story and even experience a traditional tea ceremony.

So next time you’re in Tbilisi, take a break from wine and discover another fascinating side of Georgian culture. 🍵
