Georgian New Year Traditions

In Georgia, New Year is celebrated at home with family, a big table of food, and old traditions. Instead of a Christmas tree, many homes decorate with chichilaki, a curled walnut-wood ornament believed to absorb bad luck. After the holidays, it’s burned to let troubles go.

Food is central to the celebration. The must-have dish is satsivi: turkey or chicken in a rich walnut sauce. The table also features khachapuri, kuchmachi, and sweets like gozinaki and churchkhela.

Children are visited by Tovlis Babua, Georgia’s version of Santa, dressed in traditional clothing and said to come from the mountains of Svaneti.

After midnight, everyone watches for the mekvle, the first guest of the year, whose arrival is believed to bring either good luck or misfortune. Usually mevkle is picked from the friends or relatives in advance to make sure they bring luck.

The celebrations continue on January 2 with Bedoba, the Day of Destiny. Georgians believe how you spend this day sets the tone for the whole year - so stay positive, kind, and active.

These are the Christmas fairs and markets that I know of in Tbilisi. There you can taste mulled wine, buy souvenirs and listen to the music (there are free concerts on Rustaveli avenue)

Where to go from Tbilisi for a one-day escape?

Today I want to share a an idea on where you can go for a day trip from Tbilisi (and maybe even spend New Year there - the place is really nice).

Just about an hour from the city centre is Kiketi FarmThere is a real farm, greenhouses, a rose garden, their own wine(you can try it in the restaurant), and a small hotel with different houses - from the traditional ones to the modern ones. You can take a walk, go horseback riding, enjoy a relaxed lunch at a beautiful restaurant(try pork ribs!), or stay overnight in one of their cute houses.

They also have a program planned for December 31 and January 1, so it’s a nice option if you want to be out of the city. There will be festive dinner and a party - but you have to book a place.

Is travel insurance now mandatory in Georgia?

Right now, posts are popping up in all public groups and from many guides, in my opinion, causing unnecessary panic.
👀The claim is that starting January 1, travel insurance will be mandatory when entering Georgia.

🤔A bit of background:
Talks about mandatory insurance began back in 2024, but since then no additional regulations have been passed, and the deadlines kept getting postponed.

🤔What’s happening now:
The government is supposed to issue a special decree regulating mandatory insurance, and a few days ago the deadline for adopting it was moved to January 1, 2026 (meaning they’re informing people literally one month before).

🤔What about the current situation:
There’s no clear information. It seems they’ve set regulations for travel insurance (the standard $35,000 coverage), but there’s no information yet on whether a similar rule will apply to expats and people with residence permits.
There’s also no answer to whether you need to provide insurance if you already have local Georgian insurance.

🎄The chances that such a law will be adopted right before the holidays without explanations are quite low.

My advice: if you’re traveling anywhere as a tourist, get insurance regardless and choose one that covers your activities. Better safe than sorry.

How I Plan My Own Vacation as a Travel Planner ✈️🌏

When I travel, it’s never just “put a pin on the map and go.” I want to see as much as possible - that’s my rule.

This year for Christmas & New Year I’m going big:
2 weeks · Hong Kong · Macau · Philippines · 8 flights · packed schedule
Let’s go! 🚀

I start planning early.
I began back in May - I had fixed dates, so catching random cheap tickets didn’t work this time.

Then came the route.
I really wanted Hong Kong and Macau, but flying 17 hours just for that? Not ideal.
So I added a visa-free destination… and after watching videos of turquoise water and marine life, the choice was obvious - the Philippines! 🏝

Next: the rough itinerary.
I checked what to see in each place, wrote everything down in Notion, and split it by days based on distance and timing.

And finally flights & hotels.
I compared options, made lists with prices, and booked what I needed.

These are just the first steps of my planning process.

I’m running a tour to Vietnam in April 2026, and our first stop is Ho Chi Minh City - the country’s biggest and busiest metropolis.

There’s no city tour included in the program, but if you arrive earlier, here’s the route I recommend.

Start with the War Remnants Museum - a thoughtful and emotional museum about the Vietnam War and its impact. It’s a heavy topic, so feel free to skip it if military museums aren’t for you.

Just 500 meters away is the Independence (Reunification) Palace - the place where South Vietnam surrendered in 1975, ending the civil war. The building is a stunning example of 1960s architecture, with beautifully preserved interiors.

🎟 80,000 VND

Next, head to Saigon City Hall, built at the end of the 19th century and inspired by the Paris City Hall.

Nearby, you’ll find the Notre Dame Cathedral, the largest church the French built in their colonies - all its materials were imported from France.

Right beside it stands the Central Post Office, built a few years later and just as impressive.

Continue to the Saigon Opera House, constructed in 1898 as a municipal theater and considered a twin of the Hanoi Opera House.

Then visit Ben Thanh Market, where you can find everything from inexpensive bags to traditional silk costumes.

If you’re into art, stop by the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts, home to around 20,000 works.

In the evening, stroll down Bui Vien Street to see the city’s nightlife, or go up to the Landmark 81 observation deck for a panoramic view from the 81st floor.

Or how a Georgian Saint ended up on an azulejo in Lisbon✝️

👀This is a replica of Panorama from Graça Convention of Lisbon, depicting the life and death of St Queen Ketevan Bagration-Mukhraneli.
She was born in 1570, ascended to the throne of Kakheti in 1605. Amids the war with Iran she was captured by the Shah Abbas I who demanded she renounce her faith, but she refused - this resulted in years of torture and eventual martyrdom. Her remains were taken by the St. Augustine Portuguese Catholic missioners, eyewitnesses of her martyrdom, who transferred them back to Georgia.
🔷This Panorama depicts her life, torture and return of her remains to her son. The original is still in Lisbon, but when Chateau Mukhrani was reconstructed in 2010s, the new owners wanted a piece of the history of the Mukhrani to remain there and ordered a copy to be made by the portuguese craftsmen.

Which area of Tbilisi should you stay in?

Part 2

🏙️Vake

A newer, hip district with lots of cafés, greenery, and a pleasant walk along Chavchavadze Avenue.

Cons: the good hotels are mostly on the main avenue - and they’re pricey. Step off the main street and it becomes less interesting: steep hills and not much to see.

🎻Vera

A small but lively district between Vake and the Center. Close to the Philharmonic, Rustaveli metro, plenty of cafés and shops, and more good hotels.

Cons: step away from the main road and you get narrow sidewalks and streets that aren’t ideal for strolling.

If you want a quieter area but still close to the center - Vera is a great choice.

⛪️Avlabari

Across the river, budget-friendly, full of mini-hotels, and close to the cathedral. Getting to the center is just a quick walk over the bridge.

Cons: not the prettiest area - a bit rough and somewhat run-down.

But if you want to save money while staying close to the center - it’s perfect.
