The Story Behind "Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary",.....Volta Region-Ghana...
The people of Tafi are known to be migrants from Assin in the central region. During the migration, they carried with them their god and placed it in a house. The god was then demanding for a cool place to live so they moved the god into the forest.
After some days, the god was surrounded by lots of "Mona Monkeys" and the natives believed these monkeys followed and guided them from Assin to their current location and started worshiping the monkeys as well.
When Christianity was introduced to the natives in the 1980's , they started killing the monkeys because of their change in faith until a man called John Mason (who was working with an NGO based in Accra, Ghana) introduced the benefits the town might derive from the monkeys in 1993.
Today, some percentage of the money derived from the tour is used to develop the town.
The monkeys are once again sacred to the village and lives freely among natives. Nobody is allowed to hunt them and Nobody is allowed to cut down trees.
The monkeys have divided themselves into 4 groups and each group has a leader .An added attraction is the different species of trees and birds in forest.
Visit Tafi Atome and its Monkey Sanctuary and see how humans and animals live together as neighbors.
