Tourism Ministry Partners with Central Region MMDCEs to Boost Domestic Tourism.

In a strategic move to reposition Ghana’s domestic tourism agenda, the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture has held a successful engagement with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Central Region to explore innovative approaches for boosting tourism through the "Reset Agenda."

The Minister emphasized the untapped potential of the Central Region’s rich cultural and historical heritage, particularly citing the iconic Cape Coast Castle, as a critical driver of local economic development. She urged the MMDCEs to harness these resources to attract investment and increase local and international visitor numbers.

“We must adopt innovative strategies and foster stronger collaboration to transform our heritage sites into vibrant economic assets,” she stated. “This effort will not only promote tourism but also create jobs and stimulate economic growth across our communities.”

Addressing the need for accountability, the Minister challenged all stakeholders within the ministry’s ecosystem—including agencies under Tourism, Culture, and the Creative Arts—to remain committed and ensure their efforts are visible and impactful.

The Central Regional Minister, Hon. Ekow Panyin Oyere Eduamoah, added his voice to the call, stressing the importance of sustainable funding models to accelerate the development of tourism infrastructure and improve visitor experiences across the region.

“This region holds immense promise. But we must work together and think beyond traditional funding mechanisms to unlock its full potential,” Hon. Eduamoah noted.

The tour forms part of the Minister’s broader initiative to reposition the promotion of domestic tourism and discover new sites and tourism products that can be developed into national assets. She called on all MMDCEs to identify and invest in “low-hanging fruits” within their jurisdictions—hidden attractions or underdeveloped sites that can quickly be revitalized to contribute to the sector.

The engagement concluded with a shared commitment between the Ministry and the local assemblies to drive inclusive growth through sustainable tourism development.

Childhood Memory: The Corn Adventure.

I still remember it like it was yesterday. It was during the long vacation in our little village, when the skies were always blue and the air was filled with the scent of earth and ripening crops. We were a band of village children—barefoot, full of mischief, and always hungry.

One afternoon, after playing by the river, Kwame, Sena, and I hatched a daring plan. The fresh corn in Uncle Dodzi’s farm had grown fat and tempting. The thought of roasting and eating them under the shade of the mango tree made our stomachs rumble with anticipation.

We crept through the bush paths, whispering and giggling, until we reached the edge of the farm. Our hearts pounded like festival drums, but the thrill made it all the more exciting. One by one, we plucked the freshest ears of corn, tucking them into our shirts and sprinting back like little bush thieves.

Under the mango tree, we built a small fire with dry sticks. We placed the corn on top, turning them slowly, the flames licking the husks. The smell was heavenly—smoky, sweet, and earthy. When they were done, we peeled back the charred leaves and sank our teeth into the hot, juicy kernels, laughing with mouths full and faces blackened with ash.

Of course, by evening, our crime had been discovered. Uncle Dodzi knew the signs. He didn't punish us harshly; he just gave us the look—a mix of disappointment and secret amusement. “Next time,” he said, “ask for some. The land provides enough for all of us.”

We nodded, pretending to be sorry. But deep down, we knew we had just lived one of the greatest adventures of our childhood.

Now, whenever I smell roasted corn, it takes me back to that warm afternoon—to laughter, burnt fingers, and the wild joy of stolen maize.
