Ghanaians travelling between Ghana and UK via Europe with a Ghanaian passport Please Read

Please note the following:

As of 1st Jan 2021 if you are travelling between Ghana and the UK via Amsterdam, Paris and possibly other European airports on transit with your Ghanaian passport (regardless if you have residency in the UK, permanent stay or you are a visitor to the UK and have a visa) you must now purchase an airport transit visa. This is because the UK is no longer an EU country and so travelling from a non- EU country to another non-EU country via European requires this type of visa unless your nation is exempt. Unfortunately Ghana government failed to negotiate an exemption for Ghanaian citizens.

You are exempt if you are travelling on your British passport but you must have a visa to enter Ghana unless you have a dual nationality card. Airport transit visa is around 80 euros and you must apply for it at the Dutch and the French embassies in Accra or in London (check Dutch and French embassy websites for details). You must email the embassy to book an appointment.

If you are currently in Ghana and due to fly back contact the embassy as soon as possible.

Netherlands and France and possibly other European countries now require you to present a negative covid test certificate even if you are just transiting through. You must take your covid test within 72 hours before departure from Ghana. If you are currently in Ghana and due to fly back with KLM or Air France you must do a covid test.

Airport transit visa is not required if flying directly from UK to Ghana or vice versa with British Airways but it is likely the UK government will shortly impose a requirement to produce a negative PCR test taken 72 hours prior to departure to the UK (TBC).
