2-Day Georgetown Adventure with our clients from Italy.

Day 2.

After enjoying a hearty breakfast and checking out from our accommodation, we began our day with a visit to the Kankurang Museum.

This captivating exhibition features an array of masquerades representing the various ethnic groups of The Gambia, each accompanied by detailed explanations of their significance in traditional Gambian society.

During our guided tour of the museum, we received an in-depth understanding of the cultural heritage behind each masquerade. Our knowledgeable guide highlighted the important roles these traditional masks play in ceremonies, rituals, and community life, enriching our appreciation for Gambian culture.

Following our museum visit, we made our way to the Governor's Residence to delve into the history of Janjanbureh, formerly known as Georgetown. Our tour included stops at significant landmarks such as the Methodist Church and Armitage Senior Secondary School, where we learned about their historical context and importance in the community.

As we drove along the South Bank, we made occasional stops at various landmarks, taking the time to appreciate the beauty of the landscape. One of our highlights was visiting a typical traditional hut, where we engaged in discussions about family life, norms, values, and beliefs within Gambian society. This firsthand experience offered us unique insights into the day-to-day realities and cultural practices of local families.

This memorable trip showcases just a glimpse of what The Gambia has to offer.

2 Days Georgetown Adventure with
Client from Italy 🇮🇹

Day 1

Our adventure commenced with a convenient pickup from your accommodation, embarking on a scenic drive along the Trans-Gambia Highway.

Our first stop was the impressive Senegambia Bridge, located near Farafenni. Spanning 1.9 kilometers, this vital bridge connects the two halves of The Gambia and facilitates travel for those from northern Senegal to the southern province of Casamance.

Next, we journeyed to Farafenni for a vibrant market walk, immersing ourselves in the bustling market life of the countryside. This experience provided insight into local culture and commerce.

We then proceeded to the Kauren riverside for a delightful lunch, allowing us to enjoy a panoramic view of the Gambia River’s beauty.

Our travels took us to the renowned Stone Circles of The Gambia located in Wassu. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is unique to Gambia and Africa, and we were treated to a guided tour, learning about the fascinating history and significance of these ancient structures.

Continuing our journey, we ventured off the beaten path to Kuntaur, where we embarked on an boat safari trip to the Chimpanzee Islands within the River Gambia National Park.

This conservation program, initiated in 1979, has successfully reintroduced chimpanzees to the wild, allowing them to thrive in the large gallery forests.

During the safari, we were lucky to observe Chimpanzees in their natural habitat, alongside other wildlife such as hippopotamuses, baboons, red colobus monkeys and bird'slife.

Our day concluded with a drive to Laminkotto and later an overnight stay in the historical town of Janjanbureh, formerly known as Georgetown.

A Day Trip to Kunta Kinteh Island

Today’s journey takes us deep into the powerful story of Kunta Kinteh, a Gambian warrior kidnapped from the small Mandingo village of Juffureh and sold into slavery.

His story was brought to international attention through the groundbreaking TV mini-series and book Roots, written by Alex Haley in 1976-77. The saga traces seven generations of Haley’s African-American ancestors, from their enslavement to his genealogical discoveries.

Our day began with a 7:00 AM pick-up from our clients’ hotel, followed by a drive to the Banjul ferry terminal. We boarded the ferry and crossed over to Barra in the Northern Bank region of The Gambia. From there, we drove approximately 36 km to the villages of Juffureh and Albreda, the home village of Kunta Kinteh.

Upon arrival, we paid a courtesy visit to the seventh-generation grandchildren of Kinteh and enjoyed a guided tour detailing the life of Kunta Kinteh and his journey to the Americas.

Next, we visited the Transatlantic Slavery Museum in Juffureh, which houses artifacts and provides deep insights into the history of the slave trade. Our tour then took us to Albreda, the former French settlement, where we saw the Freedom Flagpole and the “Never Again” statue.

From Albreda, we embarked on a boat trip to Kunta Kinteh Island, formerly known as James Island—a historic departure point where hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans were taken from the Gambia River between 1588 and 1807.

After exploring the island, we cruised back to Albreda for a buffet lunch before returning to the hotel. This profound day left us with a deeper understanding of The Gambia’s past, especially its role in the transatlantic slave trade.
