While it may seem like a distant dream for wheelchair users to remain in their wheelchairs while flying commercially, promising news emerged from last week’s Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany.

The new seating system from Collins Aerospace would let power wheelchair users fly in their chairs and enjoy the same amenities as other passengers.

The U.S. Department of Transportation today announced a $50 million fine against American Airlines for “serious violations of the laws protecting airline passengers with disabilities.”

The fine came after an investigation that reviewed complaints of mistreatment of wheelchair users and mishandling of mobility equipment. It is the largest penalty ever assessed by the DOT for disability violations. According to the report: “American had been one of the worst performers among U.S. airlines in terms of both the total number of wheelchairs and scooters mishandling claims and the rate of mishandling claims.”

It also acknowledged that the problem wasn’t limited to American Airlines and that the department has active investigations into violations at other airlines.

“The era of tolerating poor treatment of airline passengers with disabilities is over,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg “With this penalty, we are setting a new standard of accountability for airlines that violate the civil rights of passengers with disabilities. By setting penalties at levels beyond a mere cost of doing business for airlines, we’re aiming to change how the industry behaves and prevent these kinds of abuses from happening in the first place.”

American Airlines will have to pay $25 million to the Department of Transportation and spend another $25 million on investments to improve the travel experience of wheelchair users.

Μαζί είμαστε καλύτεροι!

Το Πρώτο Ευρωπαϊκό Φεστιβάλ Τέχνης και Πολιτισμού Αναπηρίας DIS θα πραγματοποιηθεί από την 1η έως τις 5 Νοεμβρίου 2024 στη Λάρνακα, μια πόλη που φημίζεται για την πλούσια πολιτιστική της κληρονομιά και τη ζωντανή της κοινότητα.

Συνδιοργανώνεται από την Οργάνωση Πολιτισμού «Νεόφυτος», την EASPD και την Πολιτιστική Πρωτεύουσα 2030 Λάρνακα, με την υποστήριξη του Δήμου Λάρνακας, του Υπουργείου Παιδείας, Νεολαίας και Αθλητισμού και του Υφυπουργείου Πολιτισμού Κύπρου.

Το φεστιβάλ αποσκοπεί στη δημιουργία ενός χώρου συνάντησης και ανταλλαγής ιδεών, προάγοντας τη συμπερίληψη των ανθρώπων με αναπηρία και την αξία της διαφορετικότητας. Μέσα από ποικίλες εκδηλώσεις, όπως εκθέσεις, εργαστήρια, θεατρικές παραστάσεις, ανακοινώσεις ακαδημαϊκών και παρουσιάσεις σημαντικών έργων για την κοινότητα των ανθρώπων με αναπηρία, το φεστιβάλ στοχεύει να εμπνεύσει και να ενθαρρύνει τον πολιτιστικό διάλογο και τη συνεργασία μεταξύ διαφορετικών κοινοτήτων.

Το Φεστιβάλ αντλεί το όνομά του από την ετήσια εικαστική έκθεση DIS, που διοργανώνει η «Νεόφυτος» από την ίδρυσή της.

Φέτος, η έκθεση αποκτά πανευρωπαϊκό χαρακτήρα, προσκαλώντας συμμετοχές και από άλλες χώρες, και προσφέροντας μια μοναδική πλατφόρμα για καλλιτέχνες και δημιουργούς με αναπηρία να προβάλουν το έργο τους.

Με το σύνθημα "Μαζί είμαστε καλύτεροι!", το φεστιβάλ προάγει ένα μήνυμα ενότητας και συνεργασίας, ενισχύοντας την κοινή μας κατανόηση και εκτίμηση της διαφορετικότητας. Το φεστιβάλ δεν είναι μόνο μια γιορτή της τέχνης και του πολιτισμού, αλλά και μια ισχυρή δήλωση υπέρ της κοινωνικής ένταξης και της πολιτιστικής πολυμορφίας. Η Λάρνακα θα μεταμορφωθεί σε έναν ζωντανό κόμβο δημιουργικότητας, όπου η τέχνη θα λειτουργεί ως γέφυρα που ενώνει ανθρώπους και ιδέες από όλη την Ευρώπη.
