When you wake up to an email saying your flight is canceled, you make lemonade out of lemons! (And you see lots of lemon trees throughout the day.)

We discovered a park, lots of statues, shopping, and great food. did not disappoint for lunch.

American Airlines cancelled the afternoon flight, so we had to stay an extra night in Athens. We could not get to the airport for the morning flight.

We wandered around the city with no agenda, discovering new sights (and smells) along the way.

It was a fun, spontaneous day of with while making the most of the schedule change.

Ancient Olympia, Greece 🇬🇷

The ship pulled into Katakolo, Greece. We journeyed to Foloi Oak Forest for a morning hike before heading to Ancient Olympia. The oak forest is the only one in Greece and the Balkans as well as one of the largest in all of Europe.

Our bus was the last back to the ship. It was a short port day as we sailed away in early afternoon.

We visited Achilleion, the retreat Empress Elisabeth of Austria built in 1889-1891 after the sudden death of her son. We could only see the gardens due to ongoing renovations inside the palace.

We also walked around Corfu plus explored the Old Fortress. The views are beautiful on this Greek island in the Ionian Sea.

Why stop at 50 when you can hit 51 countries!?!?

Kotor = WOW!!

We walked city walls again. Then we rode up their cable car. What a view!! (Can you see our ship? That was about halfway up the ride.) This is a “must do” if you’re ever in Kotor!! There is also a mountain coaster that we rode that was worth the wait. .me

Afterwards, we explored the old town with a little shopping then back to the ship.

We were amazed at Kotor while !!

This port was special as it was my 50th country to visit! We walked around the Old Town wall, wandered the streets of Old Town, and took the cable car to the top for the sunset view.

Kefalonia is the largest of the seven Ionian Greek islands. We started in Argostoli at the port. We drove over the mountain to the Sami Caves, Drogarati and Melisani. The second is a geological wonder discovered after an earthquake in the 1950s with a lake below ground level.

The view of Myrtos Beach from the lookout point was breathtaking!

Back in Argostoli, we walked the De Bosset pedestrian bridge and enjoyed exploring the town.

We rode to Veria (Berea in Acts 17:11). The Greek Orthodox Church built a monument commemorating Paul’s visit there.

We then returned to Thessaloniki and visited a church built similar to the ruins we saw in Philippi the previous day. A short walk from there was the site of the archeological ruins of Thessaloniki.

Their military was preparing for their upcoming national holiday celebration, so we saw several “fly overs”.

After lunch on the ship, we went back into town to see some of the landmarks. The Alexander the Great monument reminded me of the history classes I taught when we homeschooled. We climbed the tower that is one of the focal points of the city. The view was impressive.

This was the only rainy day of our cruise. We didn’t go shore until after lunch once most of the rain had passed.

First stop was for some banoffee. Best dessert of our trip! (Side story: Another travel advisor was sitting next to us. After friendly greetings, she mentioned that she was having internet issues booking a cruise. I suggested a possible reason and solution. A few minutes later, she was buying our lunch because my suggestion worked and “saved her hours of waiting on the slow way to work”. You never know when you can make someone’s day better!)

We saw the iconic Mykonos sites - windmills, Little Venice, narrow streets (legend has it that they were built this way to confuse pirates), white churches, and beautiful water views all around!

Mykonos is lovely even in the rain when we are !!

Ephesus never disappoints!

Paul wrote a letter to the church at Ephesus. The city was an important port during his time. Only a small part of it had been uncovered. It’s one of the most well-preserved ancient cities that I’ve ever seen.

The Terrace Residences give a peak into how some of the Ephesians lived. The amphitheater is where Paul went in Acts 19.

Santorini, Greece 🇬🇷 (Part 2)

After a quick lunch, we met a guide for an e-bike tour on the south side of the island with .adventures. We had never seen this part of Santorini.

After a quick tour of the Tomato Museum (tomatoes are a huge part of Santorini’s heritage), we got fitted for our e-bikes. Our tour took us along the black-sand beaches to the only surviving castle on the island. We saw farmland that looks much different than what we are used to seeing with its porous ground.

There was another bride and groom taking photos at the end of our tour. (We are three for three!) The sunset was stunning.

After a quick gelato, we headed to the cable car expecting to stand in line. Instead, we walked right into a car which we had to ourselves and headed down. No better way to end our day !!
