9 TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT TO ATHENS:
(not your typical “take photos in Plaka”, but actually useful things)
1. Look for restaurants without photos on their menus (photos are usually the sign of touristic places as only a tourist would not know what moussaka eg looks like). Also, as locals we appreciate places with 4.6+ stars in reviews. If you’re a party of 5+ people make reservations for dinner!
2. When it comes to the Acropolis Hill, during the summer time the crowds vary: early in the morning and late in the afternoon/evening it may get very crowded but the temperature is cooler. At noon it will get too hot but not as crowded. Choose wisely!
3. Wear good walking shoes with a grip. Listen; Athens is not mount Everest, but surely the marble or the limestone can be polished smooth. I know that the new pair of heels is perfect for vacation but who wants to go back home with a twisted ankle?
4. Bring your sunscreen! Cannot stretch this enough- the sun is sooo aggressive in the city, especially during the summer time.
5. On that note, do not forget your hudrojug! Athens is fairly dry, you could easily become ill if you don’t hydrate. I don’t mean to scare you. Just keep in mind that tap water in Athens is generally safe to drink.
6. The metro is a great way to go around. Your ticket will cost 1.20€ and is valid for 90 mins for ALL public transport. Tickets are issued from the metro station (about 65 stations in Athens), however you can also tap your credit card (wouldn’t recommend) instead of a ticket when entering a bus/going inside the metro.
7. Visit beyond the city centre. Surely the city centre is where you will find all the museums, archaeological sites, hotels. Nevertheless, everyday life for most of us takes place in the suburbs, which are also quite charming.
8. Choose experiences, not just attractions. History comes alive only when you understand why places matter. Take your time through the archaeological sites/museums. Don’t think that you should fit all different arc. sites in one day- by the end of it you will be exhausted.
9. When it comes to criminality, Athens is generally safe. Be careful of your personal belongings and you should be fine. When in crowded places hold your bag/pockets tight, pickpockets should be your only concern, just like any other big city.
